FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT,

Dear Members and Friends:

See you at Fall Boards this week and remember, if you are reporting as a District Membership Officer, please let Wendy Curran know; and as a Chairman, please let Sonya Matthies know.

We have some great speakers coming, hope you are able to join us.

If you are writing an article for the CA Clubwoman magazine, remember your number of words is approximately 250, pushing it to 300 if you have a lot to inform us about. Three short paragraphs is good, and both your CA Clubwoman article and Quick Bytes articles will be edited by the Editors and can be changed.

I am enjoying seeing your projects, meetings and installations, membership orientations and workshops on Facebook. Whatever did we do before social media!

Don't forget to bring your ESO book for the book exchange to Reggie Mattox at the Fall Boards this week. Make your page turner memory one to share with a friend.

Thank you, see you Thursday! Come join the fun and learning together about membership!

Love and Aloha,

Barbara

1st VP/DEAN - SONYA MATTHIES

TIME CONTINUES TO MOVE FORWARD…ARE YOU?

The CFWC September Executive Board in Costa Mesa, CA on September 15, 16, 17 is almost here! Hopefully, you or a representative from your club or district will be attending. It is so important to attend and share the learning, interaction, and friendship these meetings offer. I look forward to meeting with the District Deans on September 17 from 9:00 a.m to 10:00 a.m. and the CFWC Chairmen from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

In regard to “Moving Forward” are your officers and chairmen moving forward in their positions and interacting with members? Now is the time to contact the officer or chairmen who held your position prior to record their time, efforts, and focus for the earlier part of the year that you will need to include in your reports for 2022.

Every day offers us the opportunity to make a difference in our communities and beyond! Thank you for all you have done and all that you continue to do as we, representing the California Federation of Women’s Clubs, prove we are “Blessed, Bright, and Bold”!

LEGISLATION AND PUBLIC POLICY - CAROL BURKHART, Chair

For the past few weeks, I have been giving a brief look at the seven propositions that will appear on the November ballot for California. I urge each of you to do your own research. None of the propositions are supported by CFWC, but it important that we understand the propositions presented to California voters.

PROPOSITION 29:

Kidney clinic rules would be increased by the adoption of this proposition. California’s Proposition 29 on the state’s November 2022 ballot would require physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants with six months of relevant experience to be on-site during treatment at outpatient kidney dialysis clinics. It would also require increased disclosure of clinic ownership and dialysis-related infections. Proposition 29 would prohibit clinics from closing without state approval or discriminating against patients based on the type of coverage they have.

This is the third time this initiative has appeared on the California ballot.

LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION, AND DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR - VICKI HOLDEN, Chair

Attitude is Everything!  You’ve heard the expression before but are YOU making use of its meaning?

From Norman Vincent Peale:  “Think Big! Act Big!  Be Big!”

Ken Blanchard uses this quote in his book Leadership Smarts.  He encourages us to be our own best friend and believe in ourselves. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. Cheer yourself on. Write your own pep talk. It works!

A leader who presents a positive, “we can do it ” demeanor is much more likely to be a GREAT leader.

INSPRATIONAL VALUES & TIMER - SHARIE MEYER, Chair

"Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly."

“Dreams” by Langston Hughes

Is this not what we as federation members do? As we serve our communities and individuals, do we not help those communities and those individuals with their dreams? to help them find their dreams and to help make them come to pass?

ESO Book Exchange — Reggie Mattox, Chair

The September State Board will be a great time to exchange the books you have read for some new ones. There will be a “Bring one—Take one” table with hopefully lots of new books for you to select from. Join the fun and bring a book to exchange.  Make your home your classroom and continue to learning something new every day through your reading.**

COMMUNITY IMPACT PROGRAM - JANE THOMEY, Chair

You may have considered implementing a Community Impact Program but have been put off by the requirements of the contest. They should not deter you. With support of all club members and with step-by-step planning you can design a workable program that not only provides for a need in the community but also helps in creating awareness of your club and recruiting members.

To quote the GFWC manual, “Community Impact Projects should make a visual, physical, or emotional impact at the grassroots level.” To start you need to find a project that will energize your members and is sufficiently rewarding to sustain them through the two-year term. Begin with Brainstorming and Research. Meet with club members to discuss the needs of your community and look for projects that will require community partnerships, funding, planning and implementation. If your club is already engaged in projects in Special Program Areas or Community Service Programs they might be ideal candidates to consider

After brainstorming, narrow your discussion to a couple of focus areas. Seek the opinions and advice from the community and NGO leaders who would be involved in the proposed projects. Get buy-in from club members on the pros and cons of each plan. After this preliminary work is done meet to finalize a targeted project.

The next QuickBytes article will outline the Plan of Action once this process has been accomplished.  Breaking the steps into smaller segments may hopefully guide you in creating an impactful program that would also be eligible to be considered for the $100 State Prize and the $2500 National Award that will be announced at the 2024 GFWC Convention.

CFWC WORKSHOPS - Just a Reminder:

The Officer Workshops are part of a series of 3 workshops. The first (or 101) would be what to expect if you took that job and didn't know what to expect. The second (or 102) would cover additional aspects of that job. The third (or 103) would cover how to wrap up and pass it on to your successor. Anyone who wants to learn more about that position at the Club, District or State level are encouraged to attend.

The Chairman Workshops are intended to cover what that Community Service Program or Advancement Area is, what the State Chair hopes to accomplish and how you can incorporate those ideas in your Club or District activities or projects All members are encouraged to attend.
