CFWC CONVENTION    MAY 14-16, 2026

Convention is finally here.  This is the annual meeting for our non-profit corporation where we hold elections, revise our bylaws and up-date our resolutions. Make sure you bring a copy of the proposed bylaws and resolutions.  No copies of this information will be available at convention.  You can find this information in the Convention Call and online at cfwc.org.

Take time to enjoy the programs, learn from the workshops, visit the vendors, introduce yourself to the GFWC representative, and meet other club members. The Chairman’s Fair will be on Saturday morning and this is a great place to find new projects for your club.  See you soon.

PARLIAMENTARIAN - CHRIS HERZOG

Why the Chair Never asks, “Is there any old business?”

At some point in your meeting life, you may have heard a presiding officer ask, “Is there any old business?’ and wait for a reply. Unfortunately, this is an opportunity for members to raise issues or questions that maybe were not addressed at an earlier meeting.

Whether your parliamentary authority is Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised (12th edition), or some other parliamentary manual, there’s no category of business named “Old Business.” The proper term for business that carries over from the prior meeting is “Unfinished Business.” The difference is more than just words.

Statement “Old Business” may infer this is the part of the meeting where we can talk about any “old” thing we’ve ever discussed in the history of the club.

In contrast, “Unfinished Business” is clearer that these business items have been carried over from the prior meeting. Perhaps we still need to resolve a motion.  Or maybe assign something to committee to report back—then it comes under “Special Committee Reports”.

Also, the chair doesn’t ask for “Unfinished Business” because she will know what did or didn’t get resolved at the prior meeting. Instead, (for benefit of attendees) the topics might be noted on the agenda, and each item then becomes business. If we have been efficient at our meetings, “unfinished Business” will be none, as it evolves into just plain business.

Here’s where “Unfinished Business” falls in the standard Order of Business (aka: meeting agenda) followed by most club meetings:

Call to Order

Reading and approval of minutes

Reports of Officers

Report on the Board meeting & Standing Committees

Reports of Special Committees

Unfinished Business

New Business

Announcements

ENVIRONMENT - NANCY B. JONES, Chair

24/7 Environmental Recycling Center Reduces Landfill Dumping  Hours: 5,021

The Wistaria Thrift Shop, founded in 1957, raises funds for maintaining the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club clubhouse and for civic and social projects. The shop is an important 24/7 environmental recycling center for clean, gently-used household goods, reducing landfill dumping of non-furniture household waste. Members work in prep, retail, or the four major shopping events; the shop is closed during the summer. The shop supports training for mentally challenged individuals. The shop donates goods “in kind” to other recycling centers: clothing to Goodwill and the Veterans association, towels and blankets for animal shelters, and kitchen goods for the post-Eaton Fire Support Center. The shop operations helped the Club donate to 26 projects and seven In-Kind contributions with a total value of $87,738.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & OUTREACH - ANNE COCHRAN, Chair

As a reminder to send in your Poppy donations for all the veterans who served. All your donations go straight to them. Also its voting time. Really do the research on the ballots your were sent. It helps to be informed and yes, your vote counts.

LEGISLATION & PUBLIC POLICY - KATHY HOLM, Chair

If you are registered on the Legislative Action Center, you should have received the following alert on May 5, 2026: “Libraries are the cornerstone of our communities, and often the most trusted institutions in America. GFWC has a long history of supporting local libraries, bookmobiles, and literacy programs. We were organized in 1890 on the very premise of education and literacy. Join GFWC in urging Congress to fully fund the only source of federal funding for our nation’s 125,000 libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services.”

Across the country, pro-censorship groups have pushed legislation to take away the fundamental right to read that Americans enjoy in the library. Book challenges, bans, and other forms of censorship have risen to record levels. And more legislation is being proposed at the federal level to force censorship onto libraries and their patrons.

Take action today and tell your members of Congress to oppose book banning legislation like H.R. 7661 and support the right to read. We've made it simple to contact your elected leaders: just use our tool to send your message. And don't forget to share this action and our other National Library Week tools!
