The Bishop’s Discretionary Fund - Confirmation Sunday, June 1
Offertory Gifts this Sunday that are not for a pledge, will be given to the The Bishop's Discretionary Fund. Checks can be made payable to: "Bishops Discretionary Fund."
The Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, like a Rector’s discretionary fund, primarily supports community ministry, though on a larger, diocesan-wide or church-wide scale. Gifts from the discretionary fund go to support food pantries, non-profits, and advocacy organizations with state-wide impact; other dioceses in crisis due to conflict or natural disaster; church-wide ministries such as Episcopal Relief and Development; diocesan schools and seminaries; and more. The Bishop’s Discretionary Fund supplies occasional support for clergy and for congregations, usually when there is a crisis and funding can be used to support basic needs, wellness, or conflict resolution. Finally, the Bishop’s discretionary fund provides supplemental support for seminarians as needed and books as gifts to our clergy for continuing education and formation.
The Bishop’s Discretionary Fund is financed through endowment and trustee funds as well as from the loose plate offerings collected during bishop visitations to congregations and from individual donations given to honor the ministry of the Bishop. Thank you for your generous support.

We will also be introducing Patricia and Stephen, our Diocesan Consultants, to our parish.

Celebrating Manchester’s New Episcopal-Lutheran Collaborative
On Sunday, May 25, Lutherans and Episcopalians in Manchester came together to launch a bold new venture. The Episcopal-Lutheran Collaborative—comprised of the former members of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, along with the current parishioners of Grace and St. Andrew’s Episcopal churches— have committed to "developing a strategic, sustainable, missional venture in the urban heart of the City of Manchester, which will take a multi-sited and multi-staffed approach to address core issues," wrote Grace Church Priest in Charge the Rev. Ed Cardoza in a press release.
These issues include:
- Accompanying immigrants/refugees
- Tending to the unhoused, combatting housing instability, and alleviating hunger
- Supporting people in sobriety and recovery from trauma
- Meeting people where they are in their lives by reaching out to communities often unreached, or alienated, by the church, especially young adults (18-35 years of age), students, and LGBTQ+ communities.
"In this effort, we are reminded of the Prophet Isaiah’s words: 'Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth: shall we know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and streams in the desert,'" Cardoza wrote.
On Sunday, to symbolize and seal their partnership, former members of Gethsemane, which closed on May 18, walked in procession from their building while members of St. Andrew’s and Grace processed to meet the Lutherans halfway and walk the last leg of the journey to Grace Church as one body. Bishop Rob and the Rev. Cassandra Chavez, director for Evangelical Mission of the New England Synod of the Lutheran Church, led the procession. The communities then worshiped together. Allelulia!

What On Earth Do I Say? Useful Pastoral Care Techniques for Lay People
Mondays, June 2, 9, 6, and 23, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
On Zoom
When someone you care about is ill, grieving, lonely, or in pain, it is sometimes hard to know what to do. What is truly helpful and comforting and what is not? The goal of this series is to equip participants with some basic background information and solid tools that are helpful in offering a loving pastoral presence to those who are suffering or in pain. Led by the Rev. Elsa Worth, rector of St. James, Keene, and open to members of religious congregations as well as the wider community, it will provide a solid introduction for anyone who wants to feel more confident in reaching out to their fellow congregants, friends or loved ones in times of trouble. Province 1 Announces Education for Ministry Scholarship Fund
The Executive Committee of Province 1 has announced the creation of an Education for Ministry (EfM) Scholarship Fund to support EfM in the seven dioceses of New England. The fund has been seeded thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, and the committee hopes this fund can serve as a church-wide model for supporting local and regional EfM participation.
With the mission to grow an important and impactful formation program and to expand it by supporting people who may not otherwise afford such programs to participate, this fund will be administered by a committee of diocesan EfM coordinators and a provincial Executive Committee member. Province 1 will hold and disburse the funds, which will be supplied entirely by donations. According to a press release, "This partnership reflects how regional ministry can enhance diocesan and local ministry, and the Executive Committee is excited to partner with diocesan EfM coordinators to support this program."
For more information about the EfM Scholarship Fund in Province 1, please
email the Provincial Coordinator, Will Harron. Donations may be made to the fund by mailing a check, along with a note designating it for the Education for Ministry Scholarship Fund, to:
Episcopal Province of New England
P.O. Box 1455
Greenfield, MA 01302
EfM is a mentor-led lay-formation program that invites the people of God to discern and act in faith through small group reflection. Founded in 1975, it is based at the School of Theology at the University of the South and has 120,000 alumni internationally. Learn more here.

Sign Up to Receive Weekly Prayers from The Episcopal Church Public Advocacy Team
To focus its response to the many challenges stemming from the new administration, The Episcopal Church Office of Government Relations (OGR) has come up with the acronym LEAP: litigation, education, advocacy, and prayer. Recently, the OGR began releasing weekly prayers, "focused on various issues of the week that might have otherwise fallen through the cracks," according to the Episcopal News Service. Chief of Public Policy and Witness Rebecca Blachly and her OGR team "decide on the prayers’ topics after discussing the top issues of the week, based partly on the feedback that office receives from its weekly webinars and Episcopal Public Policy Network (EPPN) members." Anyone who is signed up for the EPPN's weekly Action Alerts will receive the prayers on Fridays. Sign up here. Learn more here.
