January 2025

Dear Greater Houston LGBTQ,

A Year of Resilience and Purpose

With the new year in full swing, we recognize the challenges ahead for our community. Yet, in the face of uncertainty, we find strength in one another and in our shared commitment to progress. Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities, building a year of resilience, allyship, and unwavering purpose.

At the Chamber, 2025 is already in motion with exciting plans and impactful initiatives. From amplifying visibility and inclusion to strengthening the LGBTQ+ economic ecosystem, this year will be one of action, advocacy and growth.

We remain diligent in tracking legislative and policy changes at both the state and federal levels that affect the LGBTQ+ community. We oppose any measures that threaten the safety, well-being, or economic stability of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Our dedication to safeguarding the fundamental rights of our community is unwavering, and we will continue to advocate with determination and purpose.

We are committed to monitoring executive actions and policies, whether at the federal level or state level, that impact the LGBTQ+ community. We stand in strong opposition to any actions that jeopardize the physical, mental, or economic well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals. Our advocacy will not waver as we work to protect the fundamental rights of our community.

And just this week, the Chamber was directly impacted by President Trump's executive order. Read more in this newsletter about the last-minute cancellation by the Federal Reserve Bank, where the THRIVE Small Business Summit was scheduled to be held.

We have a clear mission to drive economic impact and inclusion and create opportunities for our members and the LGBTQ+ community across Greater Houston. While this remains at the heart of what we do, we are equally committed to using our collective influence to confront injustices that harm the LGBTQ+ community. As an organization, this is simply in our DNA—fighting injustices that imperil economic opportunity and impede economic inclusion for the LGBTQ+ community.

Let’s make this year one to remember - A Year of Resilience and Purpose.

Together, we rise.

Being together in community now is more important than ever. I hope you will make plans to join us at upcoming events including the Chamber's 9-Year Anniversary Mixer on February 27th or other events we having coming up next month. Check out the latest event updates in this newsletter and much more.

We’re proud to have you as part of this vibrant Chamber community, and we look forward to standing together every step of the way. We are here to support you.

If you are not part of the Chamber, we invite you to join today and be part of this powerful work to move the LGBTQ+ community forward.

In Community,

Federal Reserve Bank cancels hosting of Chamber's annual THRIVE Small Business Summit

Late Tuesday night, we received the shocking news that the Federal Reserve Bank would no longer host the THRIVE Small Business Summit & Matchmaker, scheduled for today. This decision, forced by President Trump’s executive order attacking diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, is a direct blow to the work of supporting small businesses and economic growth in the region.

Thank you to the Houston Chronicle for shining a light on this egregious decision. Read the article here.

“It was a gut punch,” said Tammi Wallace, Co-Founder, President & CEO of the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce. “Here’s an event that’s about businesses. It’s about our economy; it’s about supporting small businesses that are working hard...”

Despite this setback, our commitment to this vital Chamber event remains stronger than ever. Our team quickly sprang into action to get this major event moved to a new location and as you read this email, the THRIVE Summit is in progress. Thank you to Chamber Impact Partner Hilton Garden Inn / Home2 Suites in the Texas Medical Center for stepping up to help the Chamber on very short notice.

This isn't just about one event—it's about an attempt to silence and erase the LGBTQ+ community. In uncertain times like these, one thing is certain: the Chamber will continue our work to ensure the community is not silenced, our businesses thrive, and we stay the course.

As the article emphasizes, if you are not yet connected with an LGBTQ+ organization for support, now is the time. Get involved with the Chamber or one of the organizations making a difference in our city and region.

A huge shout out to our incredible team—Maureen Maiuri, Ryan Wilson and Jack Berger—who worked tirelessly to secure a new venue and shift this event. That's what dedication and commitment to our members and community looks like.
