August 7 History Forum Features One-Room Schools

Don’t be tardy to a special event hosted by the Mason Area Historical Society starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2021. It will be held at the Mason Area Historical Museum, 200 E. Oak Street in downtown Mason. The new “Ingham County Rural One-Room Schools” traveling display is making a stop at the museum that afternoon for a limited appearance. There is free admission for all attending.

This temporary exhibit is provided by the Ingham County Historical Commission, whose members have spent a great deal of time researching the schools and gathering historic photographs to share with the public. Most of the one-room schools in Ingham County are no longer in existence but, through the efforts of these researchers, they will not be forgotten.

The Ingham County Historical Commission will have people at the Museum during the discussion forum event to answer questions and explain their exhibits. Visitors may participate by bringing their own photos and information pertaining to attending a rural school. As is typical with their Saturday forum format, people are encouraged to share their stories. While you are there, take time to see the many new Mason-oriented exhibits throughout the Museum building.

The ultimate goal of the Ingham County Historical Commission's research and their traveling display is to place a more permanent display featuring one-room schools at the Ingham County Courthouse. They also plan to write a pictorial history book about the “Rural Schools of Ingham County.” Any photos brought with visitors may be scanned at the event, which constitutes permission to use the photos.

One of the rural schools likely to be in the display is Mason’s own historic Pink School. After visiting the main Museum, drive over to visit the actual schoolhouse, which is also the Society’s first museum. It is now located in Mason’s Bicentennial Park at 707 W. Ash Street. While both museum buildings will be open from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday August 7th with free admission, the Pink School will stay open until 4:00 p.m.
For the Survivors. For the Fighters. And the Taken. We will continue the walk and continue the fight. We will never give in and never give up. Walk until the last light of day and the last star at night fades away.

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life symbolizes hope and our shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people we know and love.

This years Relay will be held at the Corrigan Oil Speedway in Mason on Friday September 24, 6pm to Noon on Saturday September 25.
