CHAMPIONS ARE MADE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER

This week's tip title comes from legendary football coach Bear Bryant, though many business leaders and clients I've worked with over the years could have said it. The calendar just flipped to October, meaning there are three months left to reach your goals and accomplishments that will allow you to define this year as a success.

For those on the business side, this means measuring yourselves against annual metrics and ensuring your "Plan" is reached. But what about those of us in the compliance world? It's much harder to create meaningful metrics to measure our performance. How then, do we know if we are moving the needle in the right direction towards success? Here are a few ideas:

  • Where is your company regarding the completion of its annual assigned training? Is the training on schedule, or will it take a Herculean fourth-quarter comeback to get it completed?
  • What internal or external audits have been completed this year? Have you positioned the company to measure success in this area? If not, it's not too late. Reach out and we'll give you some ideas on where to focus your attention
  • Can you name three accomplishments for the year related to compliance? They don't all have to be homeruns and touchdowns. Small successes stacked one after another can be the foundation of a successful year.
  • Have company policies been kept up to date? If not, now's the time to roll up your sleeves and get to work so that you are in a position to start off the new year on a strong note.
  • Are you measuring customer complaints, the number of regulatory issues, and attorney demand letters? Those are pretty transparent ways to tell if your business staff is "walking the walk" when it comes to compliance
  • Quick, close your eyes for a moment and think of three compliance-related goals to meet before year-end. Write them down on a sticky note and make it visible for all to see. You've just created some accountability for yourself.

The compliance process can be nebulous, making it easy to miss accomplishments. Take some time to define what success will look like over the next few months and then commit to putting in the work to achieve those goals.

Remember, "Success is never owned. Success is only rented, and the rent is due every day." Now let's commit ourselves to the grind so that we finish the year strong.

We've seen what works and what doesn't, so please reach out if you would like some ideas to define, set and reach your goals.
