Postpartum Depression Screening at Well-Child Visits- Billing Opportunity for Gateway and Fee-for-Service Patients
Maternal depression puts children at higher risk of negative health outcomes from infancy through school age, including lower birth weight, behavioral issues, cognitive function, depression and anxiety disorders. 1 Therefore, maternal depression screening and treatment is critical to promoting child health. AAP's Bright Futures recommends integrating postpartum depression surveillance and screening at the 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-month visits. If indicated, referral should be given to an appropriate provider.

Providers of well-child care may submit claims for a maternal depression screening up to four times during the infant's first year of life.

  • Screens that are positive for depression must be billed using HCPCS code G8431 and modifier HD.
  • Screens that are negative for depression must be billed using HCPCS code G8510 and modifier HD.
  • When a postpartum depression screening is provided at the infant's well-child visit, the screening must be billed using the infant's Medi-Cal ID. The only exception to this policy is that the mother's Medi-Cal ID may be used during the first two months of life if the infant's Medi-Cal eligibility has not yet been established.

See Medi-Cal Update Nov 2018 for details.

Updated Car Seat Guidelines from AAP
The AAP's new recommendations were published in the November 2018 issue of Pediatrics . Children should remain in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their seat. The AAP previously recommended that children remain in rear-facing seats at least to age 2.
Policy Updates Impacting Child Health and Safety
  • Responding to pressure from the American Academy of Pediatric and other child health advocates, the FDA issued restrictions on flavored and electronic cigarettes, with no effective date established. The restrictions include increasing the online purchasing age to 21, removing e-cigarette products marketed to children and banning flavors in cigars. However, the AAP is advocating that the FDA enact stronger protections for children, given that these products are addictive and cause harm to developing brains. Read More...
