It’s October, which means it’s also Fire Safety Month.

All month long, we have been providing tips on our blog and social media on how you can keep your home and, more importantly, your loved ones safe from the dangers of fire. Why? Because we are always thinking of your safety!

There are numerous ways you can help prevent a disastrous fire in your home, so we thought we would share those useful tips with you to help put your mind at ease and encourage you to take a few minutes to go through your residence to ensure things are safely in order for the coming year.

Fire Safety Checklist

  1. You should have smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector on every floor in your home and especially near bedrooms. Also, check batteries in both, on a regular basis, if not self-recharging. It is recommended you change batteries when you move the clocks forward and back (spring and fall)...Read more.
For our final blog post during Fire Safety Month, we wanted to build on our previous posts where we shared our Checklist to Keep Your Home and Family Safe from Fire.

There are two items in particular that we wanted to do a deeper dive on: smoke alarms and home fire sprinklers.

These are two of the most important tools to prevent against personal injury or death from fire and deadly smoke inside your residence and also to prevent losing your home. Let’s take a look at how to best utilize them to keep your family safe from the dangers of fire.

Smoke Alarms

Unfortunately, a common reason behind deadly fire in homes, whether they are electrical fires, kitchen fires or another type, is a lack of smoke alarms or smoke alarms that don’t work properly.

As a homeowner, it’s up to you to ensure you have enough working alarms in your home and to also make sure they are properly maintained.

Here is another easy-to-follow Checklist to make sure your home is protected by smoke alarms:

  1. You should have smoke alarms and a carbon monoxide detector on every floor in your home and especially near bedrooms...Read more.
We are now well into fall and the change from warm summer weather to a crisp autumn climate has already taken place.

As per usual, we’ve put together a useful and comprehensive Checklist for you to follow, to help ensure nothing is forgotten when it comes to seasonal home maintenance.

You shouldn’t expect to go out and get all these tasks done right away, but getting a head start on the work while the weather is still decent is a great way to set yourself up for success.

Checklist: Fall Home Maintenance

  1. Remove water hoses and drain outside faucets before the first frost sets in. Most modern homes utilize freeze-resistant hose bibbs that require little to no maintenance, but take into account the age of your home before relying on this. Keep in mind, they must not have anything attached that will prevent water fully draining from the interior of the faucet during freezing weather...Read more.
We recently posted our annual Fall Home Maintenance checklist to make sure you’re ready for the change in season.

This time around, we wanted to follow up on that and take a deeper dive into a few specific items on that checklist.

Today, we will go over tips and strategies when it comes to your home’s gutters, roof and chimney(s).

Please note: If you don’t feel comfortable using a ladder, it’s important you call a professional to come and assess the situation, rather than putting yourself in a dangerous situation.

Clean your gutters

Early fall is the ideal time to clean out your gutters because the weather is still nice enough to allow you to climb up and assess the amount of organic matter and debris that has built up since the last cleaning. Now that summer is officially over, if you don’t act quickly to clean out the debris that built up, the weather may be too treacherous and you’ll eventually run into roofing, siding and foundation issues in the months ahead...Read more.
