A Year-End Message from your 2013 CHEF President

Anita J. Halvorsen, FACHE
Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital

ACHE CHEF Chapter members and fellow healthcare leaders,

2013 has been a productive year for CHEF and we have been busy! With nearly 1900 (1882 as of today!) members, CHEF is the largest of the more than 80 ACHE Chapters. Covering an 6-county region (Cook, Will, DuPage, McHenry, Lake, and Kane), CHEF membership is highly diverse in terms of gender, age, race, ethnicity, professional years of experience, and types of employment settings and roles. That is something we are very proud of, and you can expect that we will have a renewed focus on diversity in the years to come.

CHEF has been graciously supported by three Corporate Sponsorships in 2013. I especially want to recognize Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council, Pepper Construction, and Trane for their substantial support. Our Annual Meeting and, sponsorships of specific events, facility tours and ad books helped bring our total sponsorship income to more than $24,000.  We will continue to explore new and different ways to enhance our sponsorship opportunities for the benefit of CHEF, as well as our sponsors themselves.

Through December we have hosted numerous education sessions as part of CHEF University. Our Ambassador program has done a great deal of work to ready the relaunch in 2014.  Fifteen education/network events have been held this year, reaching 432 CHEF members, 123 non-members, 170 students, and more. We offered all 12 available Face-to-Face Credit hours to members in 2013.  We have 318 FACHEs in our chapter, 17% of our membership.  All of our events are created with our entire membership in mind.  Our member satisfaction rating raised by .2 points this year over the last two years, in part by listening to your feedback regarding event topics.

Quality:  It's Time to Change the Playing Field

Jarrard Phillips Cate & Hancock
Whether the numbers are coming from U.S. News & World Report, Leapfrog Group or CMS, you brace yourself for every release of new data on the quality of your organization, hoping the numbers reflect the hard work your teams have put into improving the care they deliver.

Every one of these announcements presents your organization with a classic healthcare communications and marketing challenge - how to talk about quality.

For years, our industry has struggled with this debate. Most acknowledge the ratings fail to paint a full picture, are imperfect, inconsistent and hard for the lay person to understand, and on and on. What's more, an attempt to explain away a low score can come across as defensive.

On the other hand, good scores are often touted with pride across multiple marketing, communications and advertising vehicles.

At Jarrard Phillips Cate & Hancock, we think it's time for a different approach.

Lead by Example:  Know the Qualities of a Good Leader

Becoming a leader requires that you understand the roles and responsibilities of leadership and that you practice the qualities of a good leader until you begin to emerge as a leader in your personal and professional life.

You are always free to choose and have the ability to choose, to take command and to assume a leadership role in your life through several different leadership styles. In fact, your life is the result of the choices and decisions you have made up until this moment. Leaders are those who make better choices and decisions than others more often than not, and choose to lead by example.
