CHHE Member Updates
Erin Baker, Strengthening the Impact Research Scholar

Erin was named to NC State’s first class of Strengthening the Impact of Research Scholars. The Strengthening the Impact of Research (STIR) program was created to enhance NC State’s capacity to design and conduct research with broad impacts on society by creating and supporting yearly cohorts of NC State Impact Scholars. In 2021, twelve faculty/staff/postdocs who demonstrated exemplary qualification were selected participants out of nearly fifty applicants. Over 2021, they have participated in a series of five, two hour workshops to strengthen their capacity to create innovative research impacts on society and enhance their grant proposals. Impact Scholars are also designing and implementing projects of their own, and conducting a Research Impacts workshop in their department.

Khara Grieger, Goodnight Early Career Innovator Awardee

Khara was selected as a Goodnight Early Career Innovator. The award is intended to recognize and reward early career faculty that have demonstrated outstanding promise for scholarly achievement and impact in STEM or STEM education. The program entitled the Goodnight Early Career Innovator Awards Program identifies tenure track assistant professors at NC State as Goodnight Early Career Innovators and provides them with $22K per year for the next three years for scholarship-related spending.

David Reif, NAS Appointment

David has been provisionally appointed as a member of the Committee to Support the EPA’s Development of Human Health Effects Assessments. The committee will develop two workshops. One workshop will address advances in the application of artificial intelligence and open data practices in chemical hazard assessment. The other workshop will address the triangulation of evidence in environmental epidemiology.
Michael Cowley, Lab presentations and winners

Mark Simmers and Sierra Moorefield (both from the Cowley Lab) presented talks at the NC Genetics and Environmental Mutagenesis Society Fall Meeting. Mark presented his work on the role of the long non-coding RNA Tuna in the cellular response to cadmium exposure, and Sierra discussed her findings on the function of the imprinted gene Zac1 in cadmium-induced liver disease. Sierra was awarded First Place and Mark was awarded Third Place for their talks! Congratulations to both. Sierra Moorefield (Cowley Lab) was a joint winner of the poster competition at the College of Sciences Research Symposium. Congratulations Sierra!
New Members

Rebecca Lichtler (Affiliate Member)

Rebecca joined the Cowley Lab at NC State in 2021 as a postdoc. She is currently working on two projects: 1) the effects of maternal metabolic state in early development on gene imprinting and programming of liver disease, and 2) how cadmium exposure perturbs nervous system patterning during development.

Karen Litwa (Full Member)

Karen's research focuses on elucidating the mechanisms of synapse formation. We use human brain spheroids to model fetal brain development when synapses form. Using this model, we are addressing how both genetic and environmental factors alter synapse formation, giving rise to neurodevelopmental disorders. We are currently researching how exposure to environmental factors, including drugs of abuse and antidepressants, impact developing neural circuits.
Research Interest Group Updates

Behavior and Neuroscience Interest Group
Leader: Emilie Rissman

The Neuroscience and Behavior RIG invites anyone interested, in or out of the CHHE community, to attend their monthly get togethers. We will rotate the lab in the spotlight and that lab will present new data, old data, ideas for experiments, etc. Whatever strikes their fancy. The first meeting is Oct. 1st at noon and we will meet each first Friday thereafter at 12:00pm.

CHHE Seed Funds Available - Use it or Lose it

CHHE provides Full Members up to $5,000/year (April 1-March 31) for projects that are related to the mission of the Center. CHHE will provide these funds to defray costs associated with using the Systems Technology Core (STC) (metabolomics, metallomics, proteomics and genomics) and the Comparative Pathology Core (tissue embedding, sectioning, and staining). Please note that Seed Funds can also be used at other NC State core facilities including Analytical Instrumentation Facility, Cellular and Molecular Imaging Facility, and the Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Lab.

Note: Due to the pandemic and research restart, the Genome Sciences Laboratory (GSL) has a significantly longer turnaround time than normal. Therefore, from July to December 31, 2021 CHHE full members can use their STC funds or Seed Funds to get NGS sequencing done at external vendors such as Duke, UNC-CH, Novagene etc. CHHE will reevaluate this temporary change at the end of 2021.

To request Seed Funds or STC Voucher Funds go to the CHHE website and click on Supplemental Funds.

Funds must be used by March 31, 2022 so work in core facilities must be completed by mid-March 2022
Employment Opportunities

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs!
The CHHE Website posts job openings in the environmental health sciences field. Send us your postings for new jobs, email Michico (MJ) James. It's a great place for students and post-docs to see new available positions.
Cleaning out your lab? Updating your equipment?
Local schools can use your old lab supplies!

The CEC is looking to give lab supplies and equipment a new home with local science teachers to help them implement hands-on EHS activities in their classrooms. If you're ever looking to get rid of items email Katy May! There's a good chance that the teachers we work with in Wake and Durham counties will be able to use them in their classrooms, summer camps, and after school programs.
Career Development: Want some help with your grant?

All investigators, especially Early Stage Investigators, are encouraged to work with the Career Development Core to develop and refine their grants. Email chhe-ncstate@ncsu.edu to set up a chalk talk to help organize ideas for your next proposal.
