A Note from the Director
Hello Everyone,
Welcome back to faculty and students. It was great to see so many of you at the CHHE summer retreat last week! There was amazing attendance from our colleagues from ECU and NC Central, and from our Stakeholder Advisory Board (SAB)! Thank you for making the drive to NC State. I heard a lot of great comments afterward regarding the presentations made by our SAB and the panel discussion that followed, and walked by some interesting discussions following the pilot project program presentations. Thanks again to the organizing team (Fred, David, MJ, Surabhi, Katy, Lacey, Hong and Yogesh) and all presenters - great job! If you missed the event, there will be a recording on our website, along with presenters' slides. Please see more below.
This is a super busy month for me - I will be in WI for a family reunion and a class reunion on two different weekends, and in between will provide testimony at the request of Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) at the Environment and Public Works Committee, Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice and Regulatory Oversight hearing on September 19 focused on PFAS human health exposure and effects. Then myself, Katy May, Lacey Brown, and several invited CHHE members (David Aylor, Jen Richmond-Bryant, Jen Runkle, Vijay Sivaraman, and Natalia Duque-Wilckens) are traveling to Baltimore for the Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers national meeting, hosted by Johns Hopkins, Sept 22-25. On the 26th, I will join other NIEHS-funded Center directors and engagement specialists on Capitol Hill to speak with elected officials from NC, MI, and KY regarding the impact of our Center research accomplishments for polluted communities and what a level or decreased NIEHS budget may mean in future years. I hope you will participate in some of our local upcoming events.

The CHHE Summer Retreat was held on August 28, 2024
The retreat featured an overview of the newly reorganized CHHE structure and services offered to full members, highlights of new services offered by our career development program, and changes to the pilot project program. This year three of our recent Community Grant awardees presented the significant work they accomplished with the funds they were provided through CHHE. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion led by Katy May and Lacey Brown. Fred Wright presented some best practices for citing the Center and making sure that those publications are entered in NIHMS. The afternoon was rounded out by short presentations by five selected recipients of Pilot Project Program grants and a social hour for further discussions.
