CHIA Member Engagement Meeting Sees Record Attendance
Provided by Melany Merryman, MSL, RHIA
2020-2021 CHIA President

This year’s CHIA Member Engagement Meeting ( formally House of Delegates) convened on June 17, 2020 as a totally virtual event. This was at the conclusion of CHIACON20 which was also virtual with both live streaming and pre-recorded sessions. No one knew how well this format would be received by the membership, but over 200 members attended CHIACON20 and at least 100 members attended the Member Meeting, which is a record.

Nancy Anderson, outgoing President, gave the 2020 Annual Report and acknowledged both the outgoing CHIA Board, as well as the incoming Board. Committee accomplishments and the Executive Director’s Report were also shared with those present. Incoming President, Melany Merryman, acknowledged the current state of events (including COVID-19) and reinforced CHIA’s position of supporting diversity. She went on to encourage all to support needed change in order to reverse injustice and heal the nation.

Last on the agenda, the Delegates approved several bylaw changes that enabled the convening of a year-round house. It is expected that more frequent delegate sessions will improve communication, transparency, and allow for quicker action between the Board and the CLA’s whenever necessary, thus moving strategy forward in a timely fashion.

HHS Awards More Than $21 Million to Support Health Centers’ COVID-19 Response
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; Jul 9, 2020

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), awarded more than $21 million to support health centers' COVID-19 response efforts. The majority of this investment—$17 million—supports 78 Health Center Program look-alikes (LALs) with funding to expand capacity for COVID-19 testing.

Due to the urgent need across the country to respond to the COVID-19 crisis, funding to expand capacity for COVID-19 testing is being made available to LALs through the Health Center Program. These LALs operate and provide services consistent with HRSA Health Center Program requirements; however, unlike HRSA-funded health centers, LAL operations are funded through mechanisms outside of the HRSA Health Center Program.
