Revisions to Previously Published Implementation Date for Recertification Cycle Revisions and CEU Reporting Domains
The recertification timeline cycle changes and new CEU domains that were previously published to become effective on November 1, 2018 have been delayed by the Certification Department at AHIMA to ensure strategic alignment and an effective, error-free implementation. The previously published information was approved by the Commission on Certification of Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM) and allowed for an individual to report in the CEU Center (starting on 11/1/2018) using either the new domains or under the existing domains until 12/31/2019. The revised plan will be to use only the new domains starting on 1/1/2020.
Additional communications will be distributed throughout the year leading up to the 1/1/2020 implementation date.
PEPPER for the HIM Professional
TMF Health Quality Institute is contracted with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to develop, produce and disseminate provider-specific comparative data reports, referred to as the Program for Evaluating Payment Patterns Electronic Report, or PEPPER. PEPPER summarizes one provider’s Medicare claims data statistics for areas that have been identified as at higher risk for improper Medicare payments. Providers can use the PEPPER to identify where they may be at higher risk for improper payments so they can consider their statistics and whether they should take any action, such as reviewing a sample of records to ensure care provided was necessary and that documentation supports the diagnosis codes and services billed.

TMF Health Quality Institute would like to encourage providers to access this free comparative billing report and utilize it as a tool to support their auditing and monitoring efforts.

Learn more about PEPPER here and for more information on sample reports, user’s guides, recorded training sessions and national-level comparative data.

New Joint Commission Advisory on Accurate Patient Identification
The Joint Commission; Oct 2, 2018

Patient identification occurs every time a health care professional has a conversation with a patient and any time information about a patient is recorded or assessed. Because this process is universal, it is fraught with risk for wrong-patient errors that can lead to delays in treatment or providing treatment to the wrong patient.
Preventing wrong patient errors is the focus of a new advisory from The Joint Commission. Quick Safety, Issue 45: “People, processes, health IT and accurate patient identification” provides recommendations for health care professionals to consider when relying on human and/or technology factors to identify a patient. Errors caused by both relate to distractions, time constraints, fatigue, display issues, refresh times, down times, communication issues, use of aliases, non-distinct temporary names and staff workarounds.
Market Saturation and Utilization Data Tool
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; Oct 28, 2018

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed a Market Saturation and Utilization Data Tool that includes interactive maps and a dataset that shows national-, state-, and county-level provider services and utilization data for selected health service areas. Market saturation, in the present context, refers to the density of providers of a particular service within a defined geographic area relative to the number of the beneficiaries receiving that service in the area.

The eighth release of the data tool includes a quarterly update of the data to the sixteen health services areas from release 7, and also includes Preventive Health Services data. Release 8 also includes two additional reference periods, and will therefore include nine, twelve-month reference periods and the following health service areas: Home Health, Ambulance (Emergency, Non-Emergency, Emergency & Non-Emergency), Independent Diagnostic Testing Facilities (Part A and Part B), Skilled Nursing Facilities, Hospice, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Clinical Laboratory (Billing Independently), Long-Term Care Hospitals, Chiropractic Services, Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs, Psychotherapy, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Ophthalmology, and Preventive Health Services.
HHS Announces the Official Opening of the Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center
U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; Oct 30, 2018

On Monday, October 29, the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Eric Hargan, announced the official dedication of the Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center (HC3) at an official opening ceremony in the Hubert H. Humphrey building. As part of October’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and in coordination with the Administration’s rollout of the National Cyber Strategy, the opening underscores HHS’ commitment to support and improve the health sector’s cybersecurity defenses

The U.S. Government recognizes the importance of protecting America against cyber attacks, reaffirming in the most recent National Cyber Strategy that protecting American information networks is vital to protecting the American way of life. The Administration has designated the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as the lead organization to combat these threats and develop preventive strategies across the entire economy, with HHS given the role to focus cybersecurity support on information sharing within the healthcare and public health (HPH) sector.
