Did You Know?
Facts, Figures, & Folklore About the Month of November
Did you know that the month of November takes its name from Latin word novem, meaning "nine"?
In Roman times, November was the ninth month of the year. According to the Gregorian calendar, of course, November is the 11th month of the year. Today, November is one of four months in the calendar that has 30 days, although at different times in history, the month has had 29 and 31 days.
Did you know that the ancient Anglo-Saxons called November "blood month"?
This was the month in which they slaughtered their animals for food for the upcoming winter -- and offered animal sacrifices to the gods to protect them throughout the bitter cold season.
Did you know that topaz is the birthstone for the month of November?
The golden brown to yellow colored stone is one of the hardest minerals in nature. The extremely rare blue topaz is produced by heating and irradiating clear crystals.
Did you know that in the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the last Thursday of November?
In Canada, however, Thanksgiving is an October holiday. Other holidays celebrated during the month of November include All Saints Day (November 1), Los Dias De Los Muertos (Nov 1 & 2), Veterans Day (usually November 11), American Recycles Day (November 15), and National Adoption Day (the Saturday before Thanksgiving).
Did you know that the Berlin Wall "fell" in November 1989?
Other important November dates in history include Abraham Lincoln's delivery of the Gettysburg Address (1863) and President John Kennedy's assassination (1963). Less earth-shattering, but still seminally important in American culture, were the premiers of Sesame Street (1969) and HBO (1972).
Did you know that both President Harding and President Polk were both born on November 2nd -- with 70 years separating their births?
Other famous November birthdays include
:
British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (November 30), Demi Moore (November 11), Mark Twain (November 30), Jimi Hendrix (November 27), John (November 25) and Robert (November 20) Kennedy, and Whoopi Goldberg (November 13)

Richard Glen Edwards was born September 10, 1943, in Range, Alabama, to the late Martin Fletcher and Mary Bell Baggett Edwards. He was taken from this earthly home September 30, 2018, in Mobile, Alabama. Glen supported his family affiliated with the trucking industry. He gave nineteen years of dedicated service to Johnsons Motor Lines in operations and twenty-eight years to Baldwin Transfer Company as President. Glen took pride participating in the Order of Inca organization, had a great love for his Alabama football (roll tide) and always enjoyed hanging out with his family. He enjoyed visiting the beach, playing with his grandchildren and providing for his family. Well known at the local McDonalds and Krystal’s, he would visit every morning to relax and read the newspaper. Glen was a well respected gentleman and would be approached by many for advice on anything and everything. He was always a delight to be around and would make jokes even during the worst situations. Glen worked hard, enjoyed life and laughed often. He will be remembered for his honesty, care for others above himself, living for his family, teaching them that taking time to have fun is important and molding them into good individuals capable of making wise decisions.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Lois Edwards Johnson, two brothers: Cecil F. Edwards and wife Lola, Ned Clinton Edwards and wife Lo, one sister-in-law; Juanita Edwards and one brother-in-law; Burns Clark.
