Don't Forget About Helping With

Saturday's Pumpkin Unload!

As of Wednesday afternoon, our pumpkins are on the road! Which means the Pumpkin Patch returns to CHPC this weekend! Volunteers are needed, not only to sell pumpkins throughout the month after they get here, but to unload the trunk as the beautiful gourds arrive! We will meet this Saturday, September 28 in the front courtyard to unload the delivery truck at 9:00 am. The grand opening of this year's Pumpkin Patch will be the next day after worship on Sunday, September 29 at 11:00 am.

Thank you to those who have already signed up to serve so far! Sign up sheets are in the Narthex or you can still fill out our volunteer survey below to let us know when you can help. All sales go to support our children and youth ministry, such as helping to send our youth to the Montreat Youth Conference. Please save the dates below and spread the word by inviting others to join us for all the fun there is to be had in CHPC's Pumpkin Patch!

This Sunday in Worship: September 29, 2024

Nineteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Last week in worship, we discussed how the wisdom from on high lifts us up into the light and life of the Kingdom of God unlike the vices of this world, which hold us down in darkness. By being doers of the Word, we draw near to God and our faithful actions will show God's good work in the world.

This week, we conclude our study of this counter-cultural book with a discussion on the spiritual practice of prayer. James tells us, "The prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective." Join us this Sunday as we ponder how Christ may call us to be the very answers to the prayers we offer.

Come share the Peace of Christ with coffee and fellowship before worship, beginning at 9:30 in the Parlor! All are welcome; hope to see you there!

Sunday's Scripture:

James 5:7-20, NRSV

Sermon Title:

"Praying with Patience"

Minute for Ministry Recap:

Colonial Heights Presbyterian Dayschool

One of the most wonderful ministries of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church happens through the work of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Dayschool. I’m grateful not only as a dayschool board member and the pastor’s wife, but as a parent who has been blessed beyond measure by this mission of our church.

The dayschool director, Lisa Robinette, and her staff daily offer a home away from home where almost 75 children from 6 weeks to 5 years old are loved, cared for, and nurtured. For three years in a row, our dayschool has been rated Best Day Care in Kingsport by our community, and for good reason. I’m also proud that the relationship between the dayschool and church is strong. As partners in ministry, we can make a greater impact in this community together. Last year, the session and the dayschool board worked together with Lisa to make a much needed playground improvement happen. An improvement that the dayschool, our church members, and our community all benefitted from.

So please, be proud of your ministry of our church. And please be involved. Pray for the staff and children. Offer your time or skills to Lisa. Show the staff appreciation with a note or gesture. If you have any questions about the dayschool, please reach out to me, Lisa, or any one of the other eight board members who are all active church members. Thank you for supporting this meaningful ministry and may God continue to bless all those children and families we are able to serve in this special way.

In Christ,

Be Sure to Sign Up for the Blood Drive

CHPC is excited to partner again with the Marsh Regional Blood Center by hosting a blood drive at the church during our upcoming Pumpkin Patch! The bloodmobile will be taking donations in the parking lot from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 6. Sign ups are available in the church office. Thank you for serving in this most special way!

Can You Help Support Our Youth?

During the month of October, the Youth Group will be spending every Sunday evening out in the Pumpkin Patch! We'll be hanging out from 5-7, having a bible study, enjoying autumnal activities, sharing a meal, and of course--selling pumpkins! As the Youth Group makes this month long transition into the Patch, our church family has an opportunity to support our youth by providing meals for these gatherings. Please follow the link below to see the youth dinner schedule and sign up. Or if you would simply like to contribute to cover meal, please contact Tyler. Remember that we will be outside, so please plan these meals accordingly. Thanks so much for supporting our fantastic youth group!

Congregational News

Condolences are offered to the family of Shirley Hurst who passed away last Tuesday, September 10. A visitation and Service of Remembrance in honor of Shirley Hurst will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, September 27. Worship will begin at 3:00 pm. Thank you for keeping Wes and Lisa Hurst, as well as their entire family, in your prayers.

Sunday School Classes continue this Sunday after worship at 11:15 am. The Disciples Class meets in room 218 to discuss a lesson from the Wired Word, and the Remnant Class meets in room 221 to discuss the scripture from that morning’s service. Contact David to learn more about either class or to get involved in other Christian Discipleship opportunities.

The Children's Choir practices after worship in the Choir Room this Sunday morning. All children ages 3-11 are welcome to come, sing, and play! We all look forward to hearing our little ones sing in worship on Sunday, October 13. Parents--please contact either Emily Broadhead or Carolyn Barry with any questions.

All are welcome to enjoy a congregational lunch after worship next Sunday, October 6. All are welcome to this time of fellowship as we break bread together on World Communion Sunday.

Home Communion will be offered on Sunday, October 6 in honor of World Communion Sunday. Please contact David if you, or someone you know, would like to receive the sacrament that afternoon.

Trunk or Treat will be here before we know it. Please plan to come and decorate your trunk on Saturday October 26 from 5-6pm. We have also begun collecting Halloween candy for this event. Baskets are labeled and in the Narthex on Sunday mornings. Please let Tyler Paulsen or Brenda Hutchins know if you would like to decorate a trunk to share treats with the over 400 visitors who stop by each year.

The Shoebox Ministry is in full swing! If you are interested in sponsoring a shoebox for a child in need, please signup with Brenda or Jonathan Hutchins. Boxes are due by Sunday, October 27 and may be left in the parlor.

The Midweek Bible Study continues each Wednesday from 3-4:00 pm in the Parlor. All are welcome to enjoy this lively discussion about the upcoming lectionary readings used on Sunday mornings. Contact Lisa Pecorini if you would like to participate or know more!

CHPC hosts a special prayer gathering each Wednesday evening in the church parlor at 6:30 pm. This weekly experience meets for a 30 minute intentional time of communal prayer and contemplation. All are welcome to come by and drop in as we turn to the Lord and listen for the movement of God’s Holy Spirit.

Have you already signed up for CHPC's New Phone Tree System? This ministry resource helps to keep the body of Christ connected in praying for various concerns within the church. This new system is able to accommodate a preference between receiving a phone call, email, or text message. Please let Mary know if you desire to be added to the prayer list, or if you have a preference on a specific communication style.

All items for the weekly online newsletter should be emailed to Mary at office@chpres.org by noon on Wednesday.
