Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church is a congregation that

values a diversity of belief. Whether you're full of faith or full of doubt,

you'll find people who have been there and accept you for where you are.

We welcome all people to worship, pray, eat, seek spiritual answers, and enjoy life within this community of faith. All are welcome!

Our Annual Worship Volunteer

Training has been Rescheduled!

Unfortunately, due to this past weekend's power outage at the church, we had to post-pone our volunteer training lunch. But never fear, it has been rescheduled! All are welcome to attend our annual worship volunteer training on Sunday, January 26. We will gather after worship and our annual congregational meeting at 11:30 am downstairs in the youth center. Lunch will be provided. Come and learn the in's and out's of serving as a liturgist, usher, communion preparer, and even some of the theology about why we worship the way we do. Please contact David if you’re interested in participating.

This Sunday in Worship: January 19, 2025

Third Sunday of Epiphany + Officer Installation

Sunday's Scriptures:

Jonah 1:1-17, NRSV

Jonah 2:1-10, NRSV

Sermon Title:

"Deepening our Faith:

Distress and Deliverance”

All are invited to plunge into the deep with us in this new year as we continue to sail through our new sermon series about a peculiar prophet named Jonah! Last week we jumped into this story by hearing how the word of God came to Jonah, and how God began working through others to teach him a deeper truth about God's grace. This week, we reflect with this reluctant prophet in the belly of a big fish (not a whale!) as we prayerfully discern the implications of this God-given call. What would it mean for us to live into the wideness of God's mercy? All of God's beloved children are welcome to learn and grow with us as we listen for the Word of the Lord!

While no one expected a power outage last Sunday, praise be to God for good friends who were able to come together and record a worship service to share with our church family. Special thanks to the volunteers, elders, and staff who worked quickly to help make this intimate service happen!

Below is a link you can use to worship with us at any time. This service kicked off a new sermon series from the Book of Jonah, as we learn more from this prophet about the nature of God's grace and how we are to respond to the gift of this good news. No matter where we are: in Nineveh, on the way to Tarshish, out on the Mediterranean Sea, or stuck on our couch, all are welcome to worship with us!

The Season of Epiphany continues at CHPC as we prepare to ordain and install a new class of elders this weekend. Throughout Epiphany, we look like the magi who visited the Christ-child for a similar star that guides us to our newborn king. All are invited to pay attention to what God illuminates before us in this new year and how we might faithfully live into that light of life in 2025! If you did not get a star word, see David on Sunday and don't forget to wear red to symbolize the movement of the Holy Spirit at work through the leadership of our new Elders!

New Year, New Youth Study Series!

Time and again through scripture, when people within the narrative brush up against the divine, they are often reminded to "be not afraid". This familiar refrain is one of the most pivotal threads in the Bible, from cover to cover. And the fact that so many messengers and prophets had "be not afraid" on their lips should signal that the life of faith is not for the faint of heart. Unfortunately for us, the scriptural command "be not afraid" is tricky, because simply telling someone not to be afraid rarely (if ever) works.

With the new school semester starting back up, the CHPC Youth Group is excited to kick off our new bible study series Be Not Afraid. We will discuss that though the fear is real, we are not left alone to dwell in it. We are invited instead to move faithfully through the fear by tuning into God's presence, trusting in God's promises, taking one step at a time, and persevering. Be with us as we seek to be not afraid in 2025!

Now that it is the spring semester, we once again ask our congregation to get involved with the youth group in a number of ways. To start, we ask you to keep these students in your thoughts, hearts, and prayers. Invite God to work within their lives, to strengthen and grow their faith in our Lord and their faith in themselves. Another way to support this ministry is by clicking the link above to visit the Youth Group Meal Train. Sign up to provide a meal for one of our Sunday evening gatherings. Finally, another way to aid this ministry is to contact Tyler to be an adult volunteer with our youth on Sunday evenings. We invite you to join us for yourselves and see what God is up to in the CHPC Youth Group!

Come game and soup with us!

Join us for a Soup & Bowl Sunday night of games on February 16th! Our board game night will kick off at 5 pm, so bring a game to play with others. Dinner will also be a chili and/or soup competition, so be sure to bring your favorite winter chili, warm soup dish, side of bread, or favorite dessert to share. We will be voting on our favorites, so a pro tip for you: bring your own muffin tray so you can sample them all!

Blessing Box Highlight: January

Thank you so much for your support and stewardship of our Blessing Box! Because of your kindness, there are many people in our community who are being served with food and other necessities. For the month of January, we would like to emphasize the collection of can goods to warm the hearts and souls of our neighbors in need. Hearty soups are most welcome!

As a reminder, there are always collection boxes in the narthex for you to conveniently place donations. Please donate whatever you can, either from the list or items you think people in our community would see as a Blessing!

Thanks again for all you do to Love our Neighbors,

Your Missions Committee

Are you Signed up for the CHPC Phone Tree?

With winter weather as unpredictable as it can be, this is a great reminder to ensure you are signed up for the CHPC Phone Tree. This ministry resource helps to keep the body of Christ connected in praying for various concerns within the church, including announcements about church gatherings such as worship in the event of inclement weather. This system is able to accommodate a preference between receiving a phone call, email, or text message. Please contact Mary in the church office or by email if you have a preference on a specific communication style.
