Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church is a congregation that

values a diversity of belief. Whether you're full of faith or full of doubt,

you'll find people who have been there and accept you for where you are.

We welcome all people to worship, pray, eat, seek spiritual answers,

and enjoy life within this community of faith. All are welcome!

This Sunday in Worship: October 5, 2025 -

World Communion Sunday

CHPC celebrates World Communion Sunday this weekend, on October 5. During worship, we will be joining with Christ-followers from around the world in the observance of the sacrament of Communion. We will also be collecting donations for the Special Peace & Global Witness Offering. Learn more about that special opportunity here. Immediately after worship, join us in the gym for a congregational lunch in honor of this blessed Sunday. Home Communion will also be shared with anyone who desires to partake in the Lord's Supper later that afternoon. Please contact David if you, or someone you know, would like to receive the sacrament.

Sunday's Scripture:

Genesis 41:1-16, NRSV

Genesis 41:25, 32-42, 46-52 NRSV

Sermon Title:

"Dreams of Abundance and Scarcity"

This past Sunday's sermon featured the poem, "Cage Bird" by

Dr. Maya Angelou. It is printed below, as others have asked to read it again.

A free bird leaps on the back of the wind

and floats downstream till the current ends

and dips his wing in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage

can seldom see through his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill

of things unknown but longed for still

and his tune is heard on the distant hill

for the caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn

and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill

of things unknown but longed for still

and his tune is heard on the distant hill

for the caged bird sings of freedom.

Thank You For All Your Generosity!

Thanks For Getting Our Pumpkins in the Patch!

And they're here! Over 2,300 pumpkins have been unloaded for this year's Pumpkin Patch! Sales go to support the children and youth ministries of the church, such as being able to send our youth group to the Montreat Summer Youth Conference. All are welcome to come and enjoy life in the Patch; make new friends, take photos, pick your favorite pumpkin, and spread some joy found in this new fall season! None of this could have been possible without the help of our volunteers. Thank you to everyone, especially our friends in Scout Troop 48, for helping us unload an entire tractor trailer of beautiful gourds! We also want to thank Red Dragon Kenpo Karate and Hojaca Plumbing of Kingsport for donating many of this year's pallets!

Don't forget that unloading the truck is just the beginning when it comes to the Pumpkin Patch! Throughout the month of October, CHPC's Pumpkin Patch will be open daily from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. Volunteer's are needed to help make this ministry happen and sign up sheets are located in the Narthex. Time slots are available in two hour increments and there are plenty of slots still available. This is a wonderful time to sit and meet new people or to spend time together as a family of faith. Please be sure to sign up now so that we can ensure each day is covered as we connect with our community and welcome them to the church. Thank you for your support!

Pumpkin Patch Events Happening Soon

Our Fall Festival is right around the corner! Please be sure to join us on Saturday, October 18 from 11am-2pm for a fun time outside! We need as much help as we can get to ensure that this event is a success, so please sign up to serve if you have not already done so and a big thank you to those who already have. Sign up sheets are in the Narthex or you can talk to Tyler Paulsen or anyone on CFL. And be sure to spread the word by inviting others to join us for all the fun there is to be had in CHPC's Pumpkin Patch!

Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church partners with Marsh Regional Blood Center for another Blood Drive on Sunday, October 19 from 11am-3pm. Reservations are encouraged and participants can contact the Church Office prior to the event to schedule an appointment. Please note, if you have provided a blood donation after August 25, you cannot participate in this event. Contact Mike Strickler with any questions.

Don't forget that our Trunk or Treat at the end of the month will be here before we know it! Please plan to come and decorate your trunk on Saturday, October 25 from 5-6pm. We will also begin collecting Halloween candy for this event. Baskets will be labeled and in the Narthex on Sunday mornings. Please let Tyler Paulsen or Ann Johnson know if you would like to decorate a trunk to share treats with the over 400 visitors who stop by each year!

An exciting event that is new to this year's Pumpkin Patch is a Blessing of the Animals service, which will be held on October 26, the last Sunday of the month! All are invited to bring your beloved animal companion out to the patch at 5 pm. We will have a small treat for them and will pray a blessing over our church family's sweet creatures. We will also offer drive-thru blessings for those furry friends who might be anxious to get too close to other animals or all these large pumpkins. Please join us!

Congregational News

The Flowers in the Sanctuary are given to the Glory of God in loving memory of Otis Thornton by the Thornford girls.

Stewardship Season begins this Sunday at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church. Packets are available in the narthex as our church family collectively dreams about how we can help realize the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. Stewardship Sunday will be October 19 and pledge cards may be returned at any time to Sarah Johnson in the office. Like Joseph, God is with us and empowers us to share God's steadfast love. Thank you for prayerfully discerning how our gifts may help lift up others out of the pit!

Children are always welcome in worship and have a special time together down front after the prayer of confession. All children are invited to also enjoy “Children’s Church” downstairs during the sermon and will return to the sanctuary to celebrate communion with the congregation.

Children's Choir practice enjoys a sabbath due to Fall Break and resumes after worship on Sunday, October 12. All children ages 3-11 are welcome to come, sing, and play! Contact Carolyn Barry for more information.

Sunday School Classes pause to participate in this Sunday's congregational lunch and resume after worship at 11:15 am on Sunday, October 12. The Disciples class meets in room 218 and the Remnant class meets in room 221 to discuss that day's worship service and sermon. Please speak to David to learn more about how you can get involved in either class or other various discipleship opportunities.

The Youth Group will be meeting out in the Pumpkin Patch from 5-7 pm every Sunday this month. We will have dinner, a bible study, and typically a fun activity or game. Please bring a lawn chair and plan on helping out in the Patch with selling pumpkins. Contact Tyler if you are interested in either joining in on this ministry or supporting it in any way! Click Here to sign up to provide a meal for the kids.

The Annual Christmas Shoebox Ministry is in full swing! If you are interested in sponsoring a shoebox for a child in need, please see the sign-up sheet in the parlor. The cost is $5.00 per box and boxes will be available for pick up starting this Sunday, September 28. Instructions and gift suggestions are included in your box. All you have to do is shop and return the filled box to the Narthex by Sunday, October 26.
