Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church is a congregation that
values a diversity of belief. Whether you're full of faith or full of doubt,
you'll find people who have been there and accept you for where you are.

We welcome all people to worship, pray, eat, seek spiritual answers and enjoy life within this community of faith. All are welcome!

Don't Forget About Sunday's Special Service!

All are invited this Sunday, August 25, to participate in our Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event! After a brief communion service in the sanctuary at 10:00 am, we will go down to the gym to share the Bread of Life with the world by packing meals to help those in need. Please wear comfortable clothes as we will be working together for about two and a half hours. We will pour in rice and other food items, seal the bags, pack them in boxes, and load them onto a truck. Our challenge is to pack 16,750 meals in two hours. There are many different ways to serve during this event, from sitting down to counting supplies, all the way to standing up to pack boxes. Please invite your friends and family to come help us be the hands and feet of Jesus to the world!

This Sunday in Worship: August 25, 2024

Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost

Over the past month, our church family has studied the sixth chapter of John's Gospel to learn more about what it means for Jesus to be called "The Bread of Life". We first witnessed Christ's miraculous multiplication of the loaves and fishes to feed the hungry crowds; then we remembered God's faithfulness given to Israel through the gift of Manna in the wilderness; and finally, we heard how Jesus graciously gives this Bread of Heaven to all those who come to him--not to enjoy later in eternity, but to serve others here and now!

While each week has endeavored to enrich our understanding of Communion, this coming Sunday we put all the pieces of this important passage together to celebrate this sacrament in a special way. We will come again to Christ's table to share the Bread of Life, not just within the Church--the Body of Christ, but throughout the entire Kingdom of God! It all starts in the Sanctuary before we head downstairs to the gym to practice what we preach. Come receive the gifts of God and come ready to serve, because the table is prepared.

Come share the Peace of Christ with coffee and fellowship before worship, beginning at 9:30 in the Parlor! All are welcome; hope to see you there!

Sunday's Scripture:

A Selected Reading of John 6

Parents--Please note the nursery will be offered during this entire event for those littlest Presbyterians.

August Session Summary

Your Session met for its stated meeting on Monday evening, August 19. Items of interest included the approval of: selling the church van; hiring a new custodian to begin on August, 22; setting the officer nomination schedule; and enhancing the impact of Cents-Ability offering by allowing the Mission committee to identify needs of local children and teens through a new partnership with Kingsport City Schools. More information about this "Care Portal" being an avenue for the church to love our neighbors as ourselves will be shared soon.

In addition, prayers are asked for congregational leaders as committees begin the budgeting process for 2025. Thank you for your continued generosity to ensure our church family is able to minster as each of us is called.

Church Staffing Updates

Our Custodian, Aidan Mitchell, will be stepping down to pursue furthering his education and will need to take time to prioritize his studies. We are grateful for his efforts and energy working with the church over the past eight months and we are excited for him to follow this new opportunity. We are also excited to welcome our new custodial staff member soon and look forward to introducing him to the congregation in next week's newsletter!

CHPC is currently searching for a new Church Nursery worker to help care for the littlest members of our church family. If you know anyone who would be great for this position, please contact Tyler or click here to see the job listing on indeed.

Nominations Needed

The 2024 Officer Nominating Committee (ONC) is authorized by the Session to accept suggestions from church members to serve as Elders for the class of 2027, Trustees for the class of 2027, and members of the 2025 Officer Nominating Committee.

From the names you suggest, and dependent upon the work of the Holy Spirit, the ONC will move a slate of five individuals for your approval as Elders, two individuals as Trustees, as well as three individuals to serve on next year’s ONC. In accordance with the Book of Order, a congregational meeting to elect officers has been called by the Session at the conclusion of worship on Sunday, October 20. The deadline for returning your suggestions is Sunday, September 15. You may offer your submissions by completing a nomination form and returning it to the church office or emailing it to Mary directly. Thank you for taking the time to discern who God is calling to lead our church family in this new season!

The New Phone Tree System is almost ready to roll out to the congregation! This ministry resource will help to keep the body of Christ connected in praying for various concerns within the church. This new system is able to accommodate a preference between receiving a phone call, email, or text message. All church members will be placed on the "Emergency" list to receive information about the church in case of inclement weather, and any church member who desires to receive the requests for prayer will be added to the new "Prayer Chain" list. Please go ahead and let Mary know if you desire to be added to that list, or have a preference on communication style. A test is scheduled for next Thursday, August 29 in the afternoon.

The Midweek Bible Study continues each Wednesday from 3-4:00 pm in the Parlor. All are welcome to enjoy this lively discussion about the upcoming lectionary readings used on Sunday mornings. Contact Lisa Pecorini if you would like to participate or know more!

CHPC hosts a special prayer gathering each Wednesday evening in the church parlor at 6:30 pm. This weekly experience meets for a 30 minute intentional time of communal prayer and contemplation. All are welcome to come by and drop in as we turn to the Lord and listen for the movement of God’s Holy Spirit.

The Children's Choir will begin practicing after worship in the Sanctuary starting Sunday, September 1. All children ages 3-11 are welcome to come, sing, and play! Parents - please contact either Carolyn Barry or Emily Broadhead with any questions.

The Craft Group will meet on Wednesday, September 4 in the parlor to begin making pumpkins and other crafts for the pumpkin patch. Bring your scissors, some yarn, and some good ideas and we'll get to work! If you need details, email Carolyn Barry at chewbarry@yahoo.com.

Mark your calendars because the pumpkins are coming! Save the date for our annual pumpkin roll out on Saturday, September 28. We will unload the delivery truck at 9 am. The Pumpkin Patch grand opening will be the next day on Sunday, September 29 at 11 am.

CHPC is excited to partner with the Marsh Regional Blood Center again by hosting a blood drive right at the church during our upcoming Pumpkin Patch! The bloodmobile will be taking donations in the parking lot from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 6. Sign ups will be available closer to the event.
