Thanks for Making our Meal
Packing Event such a Success!
| |
Our Rise Against Hunger Meal Packing Event was a huge success! In just 90 minutes, we packed over 16,000 meals to help feed those in need. Thank you to everyone who came out to share the Bread of Life from our table to other tables across the world. It was such a fun time to work with one another as the Body of Christ in order to make a difference in the fight against hunger!
This Sunday in Worship: September 1, 2024
Fifteenth Sunday After Pentecost
| |
In the New Testament, the Book of James is unique for its focus on action. It’s not enough to simply be “hearers” of God's word, but we are called to be “doers” of God's word within the world! James tells us, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” What everyday actions do we need to consider in order to authentically live out our faith as Christians? Over the next five weeks, our church family will study this often overlooked book to better consider how Christ compels us to act differently in a world that would rather we remain silent and still. All are welcome to worship with us as we consider the practical wisdom the Book of James has to offer.
Come share the Peace of Christ with coffee and fellowship before worship, beginning at 9:30 in the Parlor! All are welcome; hope to see you there!
Sunday's Scripture:
Psalm 15:1-5, NRSV
James 1:17-27, NRSV
Sermon Title:
"Be Doers of the Word"

Thank you for Supporting Cents-Ability!
The 2024 Officer Nominating Committee (ONC) is authorized by the Session to accept suggestions from church members to serve as Elders for the class of 2027, Trustees for the class of 2027, and members of the 2025 Officer Nominating Committee.
From the names you suggest, and dependent upon the work of the Holy Spirit, the ONC will move a slate of five individuals for your approval as Elders, two individuals as Trustees, as well as three individuals to serve on next year’s ONC. In accordance with the Book of Order, a congregational meeting to elect officers has been called by the Session at the conclusion of worship on Sunday, October 20. The deadline for returning your suggestions is Sunday, September 15. You may offer your submissions by completing a nomination form and returning it to the church office or emailing it to Mary directly. Thank you for taking the time to discern who God is calling to lead our church family in this new season!

September Suppers Kick Off This Sunday
Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church hosts a congregational supper and intergenerational bible study throughout September about the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew's Gospel. Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church is happy to welcome Alec Paulsen as our new Church Custodian! Alec will be stepping in to keep our facilities looking great each evening and we are grateful for the many ways he will help to support the various ministries of our church family. Please say hello to him the next time you see him and thank him for joining the team. Also, make sure to introduce yourself to Alec and his family, Savanah and Ruby, in worship on Sunday morning as well.
Mark your calendars, because the Pumpkin Patch is on its way! Our third annual pumpkin roll out will be on Saturday, September 28. We will meet in the front courtyard to unload the delivery truck at 9 am. The Pumpkin Patch grand opening will be the next day on Sunday, September 29 at 11 am after worship. All sales goes to support our children and youth ministry, such as helping to send our youth to the Montreat Youth Conference. Please spread the word and invite your friends to visit!
|
And to prepare for the arrival of the Patch, the Craft Group will begin meeting to knit more pumpkins and other crafts to sell in the Patch! We will meet on Wednesday, September 4 in the parlor at 10 am. Bring your scissors, some yarn, and some good ideas and we'll get to work! If you need more details, contact Carolyn Barry.
Our New Phone Tree System
The New Phone Tree System is almost ready to roll out to the congregation! This ministry resource will help to keep the body of Christ connected in praying for various concerns within the church. This new system is able to accommodate a preference between receiving a phone call, email, or text message. All church members will be placed on the "Emergency" list to receive information about the church in case of inclement weather, and any church member who desires to receive the requests for prayer will be added to the new "Prayer Chain" list. Please let Mary know if you desire to be added to that list, or if you have a preference on a specific communication style.
A test of this new system scheduled for this Thursday, August 29 in the afternoon. If you did not receive a voicemail, email, or text message from the church, please contact Mary at office@chpres.org.
