CHR November 2024 NEWSLETTER

A Message from Savannah

Dear CHR Residents and Community Members,

It brings me great sadness to announce my departure at Community Housing and Resources as the Deputy Executive Director. I have been so honored to get to know the amazing CHR residents and learn their stories and see the impacts they make on the island communities. The community members of Sanibel and Captiva are some of the most welcoming individuals I have ever met. Everyone greets everyone with a smile and the best part is that the community truly cares and supports each other. I am excited to continue pursuing my passion for helping individuals and preventative healthcare, health education and access to healthcare as the Associate Director of Philanthropy at Planned Parenthood. I have loved working with the strong and passionate CHR Team and I can't wait to watch CHR continue to grow.

Best wishes,

Savannah Miller-Berg

Savannah has been selected as a finalist for the Next Generation Leader Award!

On behalf of the entire team at CHR we would like to thank our amazing community partners, volunteers and donors for their support with Hurricane Helene and Milton Recovery Efforts.

Dear Community Member,

Devastating. It’s the only way to describe the impact of Hurricane Milton.

Milton roared ashore on Wednesday night, striking Siesta Key at Category 3 with winds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Sixty-five miles south of the storm’s center, Sanibel and Captiva endured a strong storm surge driven by winds nearing 70 miles per hour.

Milton also dumped an incredible amount of rain on our islands.

CHR is just beginning to assess the aftermath, including damage to our facilities.

Thankfully, our residents were safely evacuated ahead of the storm. Also, we will be reaching out to community leaders to do our part to help in recovery. We will keep you up to date on our process.

Meanwhile, we know we’ll need resources to repair our facilities, return residents to their homes, and get back to our mission of ensuring safe, quality, affordable housing.

The double whammy of Helene and Milton makes that mission more critical than ever.

CHR desperately needs your help! Please make a tax-deductible gift today to Community Housing & Resources.

NEWS at CHR

Second Job Reminder!

The CHR Board is providing an opportunity for our residents and supports the needs of our business community with the option to obtain a second job on Sanibel or at a Sanibel based business located on Captiva. We have modified the CHR rental agreement to not incur an increase in rent from the income resulting from the second job. This allows our residents to grow their financial stability and support economic recovery for the businesses on the Island.

Please note: In order to qualify for housing CHR residents will need to maintain a full-time position on Sanibel Island or at a Sanibel Island based business. Unless otherwise stated in the residents lease.

Recycling tips

Every community has different recycling “rules” based on their sorting process and sale of recycled materials.

Here are some tips to make recycling more efficient at Lake Palms:

·       Flatten all boxes - even the small ones

·       Clean containers - no food scraps or stains

·       No foam, no plastic bags (some stores will recycle these)

·       Empty bags into the bins. Recyclables will commingle and save space
