CHS YOUTH POP-UP SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

Teaching hearing children American Sign Language (ASL) offers several benefits, including:

  1. Enhanced Communication Skills – ASL helps children express themselves, improving both verbal and nonverbal communication.
  2. Cognitive Development – Learning a second language, including a visual one like ASL, strengthens memory, problem-solving, and multitasking abilities.
  3. Earlier Language Acquisition – Babies and young children can use ASL before they develop spoken language, reducing frustration and improving early communication.
  4. Career Opportunities – ASL proficiency can lead to careers in interpreting, education, healthcare, and advocacy.
  5. Stronger Social Connections – ASL allows children to communicate with Deaf peers and others who use sign language, broadening their social networks.

Learning ASL provides lifelong advantages, making communication more accessible and inclusive for all!

CHS's classes are geared toward elementary and middle school students and will be held ONLINE using Zoom. All levels welcome!

Workshop Details:

DEAF YOUTH NEED YOU!

Unfortunately, there are many Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing youth in foster care in Illinois and a shortage of foster families who are willing to take on DDBHH youth, especially if they have additional medical needs. These youth may end up in group homes or with families that provide minimal access to language and support. They need you!

Join CHS and Let It Be Us on Thursday, March 6th, from 7:00-8:30pm for a webinar all about how to become a specialized foster parent in Illinois.

The event will have ASL interpreters and real-time captioning.

Help us find homes and supports for our Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing youth in care!
