CHSU Policy Updates

The CHSU Policy Development Committee (PDC) is responsible for reviewing and making recommendations on the University’s official policies, including new policies and amendments or revisions to existing ones. The PDC meets regularly and forwards its recommendations to President Dunn for approval. CHSU Policies can be found on the CHSU website at: https://chsu.edu/policies/.

The PDC met on August 1, 2024, and recommended the following policies and amendments to policies, which have been approved by President Dunn.

CHSU Course Director Responsibilities Policy (Sunset)

Course Director Responsibilities are included in the University Policies and also addressed in the Faculty Handbook. On recommendation of the COM Dean, the PDC considered deleting the Course Director Responsibilities from University Policy, but leaving the requirements in the Faculty Handbook. President Dunn approved the recommendation to "sunset" the Policy. Although it will no longer be included in the University's policies, compliance with the responsibilities will still be required as set forth in the faculty handbook.

CHSU Data Governance Policy

This new policy establishes uniform standards for managing and safeguarding CHSU’s data. It outlines the responsibilities of all stakeholders in protecting the confidentiality, integrity, and security of the data. The policy allows for data to be accessed, classified, and retained appropriately to support CHSU’s operations while complying with legal and privacy requirements.

Unlawful Discrimination, Harassment, and Title IX Policy and Procedures (Interim Approval)

This policy sets out the University's anti-discrimination policy and identifies specific procedures for handling complaints concerning instances of discrimination, harassment, and allegations of Title IX violations. The Policy has been approved on an interim basis due to potential changes based on ongoing legal challenges to the regulations and political developments. The amended policy is applicable to complaints filed after August 1, 2024. Complaints filed prior to August 1 are managed under the prior policy.

CHSU Credentialing of Faculty Policy (Revised)

The PDC reviewed amendments to the CHSU Credentialing of Faculty Policy. This policy identifies procedures under which all instructors are evaluated for academic qualifications for teaching or precepting students in their assigned courses or rotations. It establishes a foundation for faculty credentialing and requires mandates regular verification of credentials at CHSU and affiliated clinical training sites. The revisions are aimed at ensuring the policy remains current and effective in maintaining the standards and procedures for faculty credentialing at CHSU.

MSBS Attendance and Leave of Absence Policy (Revised)

The PDC reviewed the proposed revisions to the MSBS Attendance and Leaves of Absence Policy to ensure it aligns with current academic standards and clearly outlines the expectations for student attendance and leave procedures. The policy amendments define excused, unexcused, and approved absences, explain the procedure for requesting approval of anticipated absences, and establish protocols for how MSBS students can make-up work missed due to an absence.

Leave of Absence Policy (COM-only)

The PDC reviewed the Leave of Absence (LOA) Policy for the College of Osteopathic Medicine.  This Policy outlines clear procedures for students to follow when requesting approval of a Leave of Absence (LOA). The Policy also identifies the key considerations to be used when reviewing LOA requests.

Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (Revised)

The Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy identifies the academic performance standards required for students to maintain their eligibility for federal student aid.

College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) Technical Standards Policy (New Policy)

The PDC reviewed a proposal to separate the Technical Standards from the COM Admissions Policy, establishing a stand-alone policy. This new Technical Standards policy outlines the technical requirements and competencies expected of students. No changes were made to the existing Policy wording.

COM Admissions Policy 2029 (Revised)

Each year, the College of Osteopathic Medicine updates its Admissions Policy. The PDC reviewed the proposed modifications to the COM Admissions Policy, which are to be used in evaluating applications for positions in the Class of 2029. The revised policy highlights the importance of applicants not only meeting academic qualifications, but also considering their alignment with CHSU's mission and vision. Additionally, the Policy outlines how demonstrated commitment to healthcare, community service, and a dedication to continuous learning can enhance an applicant's competitiveness.

COM Clinical Learning and Patient Care Policy (Revised)

The PDC reviewed the proposed updates to the COM Clinical Learning and Patient Care Policy. The policy identifies expectations for the learning environment at hospitals, medical offices, and other healthcare facilities where students receive clinical training. The Policy also explains patient care responsibilities during clinical training.

Boost Your Health with Omega-3 Fatty Acids

What are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential polyunsaturated fats found in fish, nuts, and certain plant oils.

However, your body is not able to produce these on its own, therefore it is important to attain them from your diet.

Health Benefits

One healthy benefit of omega-3s is helping with heart health as they reduce triglycerides, lower the risk of arrhythmias, slow arterial plaque buildup, and slightly lower blood pressure.

Other ways omega-3s help is with brain and eye development, arthritis relief, reducing inflammation, or disease prevention.

Sources of Omega-3s

  • Fatty fish: these include Salmon, mackerel, trout, or sardines. It is recommended to aim for at least two, 3 oz. servings per week.
  • Plant-based sources: flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, or canola oil.
  • Fortified foods: eggs, yogurt, or milk (certain varieties are enriched with omega-3s).

Supplementation

Omega-3 supplements may come from fish oil or fish liver oil. However, it is always important to consult with your physician beforehand, especially if one has underlying health conditions or currently takes medication. It is highly recommended to attain nutrients from whole foods.
