Dear CHT Member,

We made it: Spring is finally here, and the eclipse last week for me was awesome!

While we continue to work on longer term solutions, we are also making some progress. This week we expanded the Homeownership Equity Program statewide. This program provides extra equity for BIPOC shared equity home buyers. With support from New England Federal Credit Union, CHT has operated this program for a couple of years and now with support from MacKenzie Scott, we are expanding it statewide. Through this program, CHT doubled the rate of BIPOC homebuyers in our program.

Our work of creating more affordable housing opportunities will be impossible without more funding. We are lobbying our lawmakers and the Governor at the State House, and you can help, too.

CHT is a proud sponsor of Fair Housing Month which highlights everyone’s right to rent, buy, finance, and live in a home free from discrimination or harassment. I was invited to say a few words at a presentation by Leah Rothstein and Richard Rothstein, authors of Just Action and The Color of Law that kicked off this month’s Fair Housing events coordinated by Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity. Both of their books are highly recommended.

Once again, CHT is one of the Best Places to Work in Vermont! Our dedicated staff are what make this honor possible.

Thanks, as always, for reading about and engaging with CHT. Happy spring!

Program to Address Inequities in Accessing Homeownership now Statewide

Champlain Housing Trust is expanding its Homeownership Equity Program that provides a $25,000 forgivable loan to buyers who are Black, Indigenous or people of color and who are buying a permanently affordable home through the trust or its partner agencies across the state.

In 2021, the program was created to address racial inequities in accessing homeownership with support from New England Federal Credit Union. The expansion of the program is funded with $1 million set aside from a gift CHT received last fall from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

The Homeownership Equity Program Downpayment Assistance will be available through nine partner organizations covering every county of the State.
