Dear friends,

We’re bringing you this special edition of @home to celebrate National Homeownership Month. Achieving homeownership is a goal of so many of us as it provides an added level of stability and financial security for the future.

Champlain Housing Trust has been helping people become homeowners for all of our nearly 40 year history. Our signature shared equity program provides affordable homeownership for generations of owners – you can learn more about this program through the links below and the story about Wanda Hines, who owned her home for 25 years.

In this country, opportunities to become a homeowner was denied to Black, Indigenous, and people of color households through intentional laws and real estate and lending practices that spanned generations. That’s why, with the support of New England Federal Credit Union, CHT created new programs to address this historic inequity.

CHT believes that the foundation for becoming a homeowner is a solid understanding of the complicated process of buying a home. Our classes, which can be taken in person or online, are also beginning to be taught in multiple languages to better support everyone in our communities.

Our goal has always been to provide security and safety through our programs; achieving homeownership offers a wonderful opportunity for mobility as well. We invite you to explore and apply for the shared equity program or join one of the homebuyer classes we offer!

"It Didn't Get Any Better Than That"
Wanda Hines became a shared equity homeowner in Burlington's Old North End in 1999. Nearly twenty five years later, Wanda looks back on the impact Champlain Housing Trust's shared equity program has had on her life.

What is Shared Equity?
The two biggest obstacles to buying a home are saving for a down payment and the high price of homes. Champlain Housing Trust's shared equity program addresses both problems.

People are often able to buy a home through this program for about the same amount of money they were spending for rent. This allows them to securely put down roots in their community and provides an opportunity to build wealth.

The real innovation of shared equity is that Champlain Housing Trust and our buyers agree together to preserve affordability forever by sharing a portion of the home’s appreciation at resale.

Champlain Housing Trust is a world leader in shared equity homeownership. See how this model helped Andrea Todd and how it continues to ensure access to permanently affordable homes.
Becoming a homeowner takes time, but starting the process through Champlain Housing Trust's shared equity program is easy. Watch the video above to see how.
Homeownership Equity Program
Champlain Housing Trust is committed to racial justice and permanently affordable housing. Due to historically racist and discriminatory housing and lending policies, Black and other households of color have much lower homeownership rates than white households. In Vermont, white homeownership rates are 42%, compared to Black homeownership rates of 21%.

Because of this history, and with support from New England Federal Credit Union, CHT created the Homeownership Equity Program (HEP) to encourage homeownership for Black, Indigenous, and people of color households.
