Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This weekend, our newly renovated Church opens!

Before all else, we offer a special word of gratitude to those who gave to the Called to Renew campaign, which made our renovation possible. You stand on the shoulders of all who came before us. Thank you for your generosity, vision, and hope in our parish community!

According to our architect, Maureen Sullivan and her associates at Pica Sullivan Architects, our church is an excellent representation of mid-20th century architecture. Therefore, no structural changes were made to the church, only refurbishments and most notably significant lighting improvements. What immediately stands out is the change of the orientation of the newly refurbished pews and kneelers, which are now slightly angled toward the center aisle. The center aisle has a design which mirrors the side panels of the pews. Another striking element is the restoration of the chandeliers, which shine brightly.

We'll publish a list of the various contractors involved in the renovation. But, a special acknowledge of gratitude goes to Mayora Hiney, who served as project manager. She shepherded the process from the beginning planning stages to scheduling and coordination and completion. Thank you, Mayora!

As we open the Church, we remember that our Church is more than a building, but the people gathered as community. Next weekend, we will invite you to participate in the ministries of our community.

See you Sunday!

Peace, Father Gil

The Eugene M. Burke, C.S.P.

Lectureship on Religion and Society

The Burke Lectureship, an endowed lecture series at the University of California, San Diego, honors the memory of Paulist Father, Eugene M. Burke CSP. Father Burke was a brilliant theologian who after his retirement from Catholic University of America in 1976, joined the Paulist campus ministry at UCSD. Although the Paulists no longer serve on the campus, Father Peter Abdella, CSP, former Director of Campus Ministry at UCLA and in residence here in our parish serves as the Chairperson of the Board of the Lectureship. The lectures "in which scholars, theologians, informed and experienced members of the lay community, and religious practitioners from all faiths address critical issues on the relationship between religion and society and on the religious dimensions of being human" began in 1985. The most recent lecture was earlier this week, Monday, September 15th featuring Nicholas Kristof of the NY Times reflecting on the polarization in our society especially on the heels of the recent political violence. It's timely and helpful to reflect on our common life.
