Church Work Day

April 1, 9am - 12pm

Last Sunday, James Haverkamp of the Buildings and Grounds crew found a fun way to announce the upcoming church work day. Click below to watch video.

Why not spend part of April Fool's Day beautifying the church grounds with your friends?

Tasks include weeding, spreading mulch in the Courtyard and Highland Way large planter, filling the planter by the Chapel on Highland Way, staining the Courtyard benches and cleaning all the entrances and garbage area.

Lunch will be provided. No foolin'!

It's Don's 20th!

No, it’s not Don Ashburn’s 20th birthday.

But, this month does mark 20 years since Don first came on staff at Piedmont Community Church! So, we're going to celebrate Don’s many years of faithful service to our church on Sunday, April 2 following the worship service.

We want to encourage you to write notes to Don expressing your thanks for all the ways his ministry has encouraged you.

And, if you have photos of Don (especially of his younger years), please send them to Michael Barber at Michael@PiedmontChurch.org

Your email may require you to CLICK MORE at the bottom of this page to continue reading. We could write less, but there's no fun in that!

Come and See Gathering April 30

Are you interested in joining Piedmont Church? Or, do you just want to learn more about who we are, what we believe and what we do? Then, you're invited to attend our next Come and See gathering hosted by Steve Schibsted and Don Ashburn on Sunday, April 30.

We’ll meet in Guild Parlor from 11:15am - 2pm for conversation and lunch provided by the church. We’ll share a bit about who we are and what brings us to Piedmont Church and how we can grow together in faith and service.

Childcare is available for younger children. You can sign up to attend the gathering and/or for childcare in three ways:

1) In the Courtyard on Sunday morning

2) Call the church office at (510) 547-5700, or

2023 Mexico Trip in Photos

Limited Edition Picture Book Available for Pre-Order

In recent years, Piedmont Church’s media coverage of the Mexico trip has ranged from a simple slide show to a fully-produced short film. This year, rather than producing a video, we venture into new territory by presenting the event as a softcover photo book.

‘AMBASSADORS‘ will document, in a true photojournalistic style, our youth and adult leaders in action – changing lives by building homes and forming new relationships.

The 8.5″ X 11″ book will contain 150 pages using color and B&W images made during the week by Michael Barber.

‘AMBASSADORS‘ is available now for pre-order at $35.

There is no limit on the number of books you can pre-order. Cost after Friday, April 21 will be $40. Pick-up dates will be chosen as production allows, but we expect delivery mid-May.

Time to Take a Breath

The pauses between the words gives us all a chance to find our breath and focus on quieting our minds.

Come and be encouraged by each other to find a way inside through meditation. We will stretch a bit to prepare and then sit in silence. In gratitude for taking time for ourselves, we are better at caring for others.

Join Stephen Main and Sara Hirsch on Tuesdays at 5:30pm in the Sanctuary for Just Breathe; no RSVP required.

SERVICE & FELLOWSHIP

ESL Tutors Needed

Over the past two years, we have supported the feeding program at First Hispanic Church in Oakland (Spanish acronym “PIPH”). Starting in April, there will be another opportunity to help out.

PIPH provides ESL (English As a Second Language) classes to its largely migrant community. Classes are for beginner and intermediate English speakers. They will meet weekly at the church beginning Monday, April 17 and Tuesday April 18 at 7 pm. No experience is required and all materials needed are made available to tutors in advance.

An orientation will take place on Monday, April 10. Time TBD. For more information, contact Irma Hernandez at: irmahernancez777@yahoo.com, or (510) 533-4321

Or, you can contact Don Ashburn Don@PiedmontChurch.org.

PIPH is located at 1941 High St in Oakland.

Easter Basket Donations

You are invited to put together an Easter basket for a child at Harbor House. Harbor House provides after school tutoring, ESL classes, meals and other services to immigrant families and children in East Oakland.

The Deacons’ Outreach Committee seeks donors for 47 children in the kindergarten to 5th grades. The Deacons provide the baskets, and you provide the contents.

To sign up using a shared document, click here. You can also visit the table in the Courtyard after worship. For instructions click here.

We ask you to fill and arrange your baskets in Kettlewell Room on Sunday, April 2 from 11:30am - 1:30pm. Other arrangements can be made for pick-up or drop-off. Contact Katrina Bergen at katrina.brgn@gmail.com or (925) 266-1172

Theater Group Makes A Comeback

The theater group is re-activating! After two years of 'Zooming' to available performances, some of us started going out last year and would like to invite more to join us at various shows, ballets and musicals.

We’re a casual group. Someone announces they’re going to an event and others are welcome to join. Dinner out often happens beforehand.

Known upcoming events are Ruthless at the Altarena Playhouse in Alameda (some of us have season tickets), a Smuin ballet, English at Berkeley Rep and three summer musicals at Woodminster Amphitheater.

Contact Judy Wright at rbwright1@me.com to join.

Feed the Homeless at CityTeam

Volunteers are needed to prepare and serve a hot meal to the homeless at CityTeam Oakland. Bring your family and friends to participate in this act of service and kindness. Friday, April 21, from 5 - 7pm, 722 Washington Street, Oakland.

Sign up in the Courtyard after worship.

Pickleball Sundays 1-3pm

If you've ever wondered who plays pickleball each Sunday or why they play the game, this short film by Michael Barber sheds light on a sport that brings people together in a whole new way.

Room Needed

A male member of our church family is in need of a living space. If you have a room for rent, please contact Bob Livsey at boblivsey@gmail.com. Bob will see that your information is passed along.

Lenten Series & Life Groups

As we journey together through Lent, our sermon series will explore themes of grace and repentance, alienation and reconciliation brought up in the parable of the Prodigal Son. We’ll be guided by Henri Nouwen's book, The Return of the Prodigal.

Life Groups during Lent will spend time reflecting on the same issues in light of our own life experience. You can purchase the book for yourself, though it is not required to participate in a group.

Life Groups meet weekly in March on Thursday evenings, starting with a simple shared meal at 6:15pm followed by groups gathering in various rooms at the church from 7-8:15pm. Anyone can attend, whether or not you’ve been in a Life Group before.
