As part of our collaboration with Fern Health, a digital musculoskeletal therapy platform, Mass General’s Mihir Kamdar, MD, and Maximillian Hsia-Kiung, MD, are serving as advisors to help refine the company’s clinical strategy. Fern Health focuses on the core dimensions of wellness, including providing employers and their employees with access to on-the-go treatment to help reduce overall chronic pain symptoms, the need for surgery, and the use of opioids. The company’s offerings include personalized exercise therapy, pain neuroscience education, virtual 1:1 health coaching, and much more.

Calling All Innovative Disruptors: Ether Dome Challenge (EDC) |
Have an idea to improve care within the Patient Care Services Community?
Participate in the first Ether Dome Challenge (EDC) for the Patient Care Services community, in collaboration with Healthcare Transformation Lab (HTL) and Harvard Business School’s Laboratory for Innovation Science (LISH). Since 2014, over $150,000 has been awarded to 8 different projects.

New Medical Device Plug-and-Play (MD PnP) Interoperability & Cybersecurity Initiatives |
The Medical Device Plug-and-Play (MD PnP) Interoperability & Cybersecurity Program was founded by Julian Goldman, MD, Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine, in 2004 to improve the quality and safety of patient care by enabling innovation of interoperable medical devices and digital health technologies. The MD PnP Lab is now launching several new initiatives related to remote control of ventilators and infusion pumps, closed-loop control medical systems, and virtual critical care.
These government-sponsored research projects are part of a new Smart and Autonomous Medical Systems (SaAMS) portfolio. COVID-19 provided the impetus for significant advances in technologies, standards, and regulatory policies to enable SaAMS, such as publicizing the need and increasing the availability of remotely controllable medical equipment.
The MD PnP team includes subject matter experts in clinical care, computer science, and bioengineering. Learn about the MD PnP Lab, which has an extensive medical device inventory, patient simulators, computing and networking resources, secure remote access capability, and a cyber range to facilitate comprehensive end-to-end medical technology assessment in a non-clinical virtual hospital testbed.

Jane Moran, MBA, has been named Chief Information and Digital Officer (CIDO) for Mass General Brigham. This leadership appointment is an important step towards becoming a fully developed digital enterprise to maximize strategic, clinical, and operational value in service to our patients.
Jane will begin her new role in September!

Providers, Payers & Startups: Looking to Solve the Maternal Care Puzzle |
In 2018, the U.S maternal death rate ranked last overall among all industrialized countries. A gap exists between how racial minorities, especially black women, and white women experience pregnancy and delivery.
Through the MassChallenge HealthTech (MCHT) program, CIDH worked with Wolomi, a startup founded to help black women own their maternal health journey. Wolomi was recently featured in a story about how providers, payers, and startups are working to bridge the gap in maternal care.

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital participated in the Fitbit Heart Study, a large-scale remote clinical trial comprising a unique software algorithm for the detection of atrial fibrillation (AF). The study results will provide critical insights into the use of consumer wearable technology for AF detection and characterize the nature of AF episodes detected using consumer-based PPG technology.

Chip Technology Helping Predict Recurrent Stroke |
Investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine recently completed a clinical trial exploring methods to help doctors predict and prevent recurring strokes. A small chip inserted under the skin can help doctors monitor patients after common forms of stroke to predict the likelihood of a patient experiencing a second stroke and identify those who may benefit from preventive therapy.

Welcome to CIDH, Yuri Ostrovsky! |
Yuri Ostrovsky, Ph.D., has joined CIDH as Managing Director, overseeing the portfolio of projects and services at the center, advancing opportunities in digital innovation that will serve MGH and the general healthcare ecosystem. He is also working to align and optimize the CIDH portfolio with digital health initiatives across the hospital and enterprise.
Yuri was a researcher and social entrepreneur, working with NGOs and government agencies in the developing world. More recently, he served as program manager for a myriad of digital projects at various academic medical centers, tackling health equity, remote care management, and patient experience. He received his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Harvard College and his Ph.D. in Visual Neuroscience from MIT.
