History of Civil War Cigars
By Henry Leish
Manager
It is said that the American cigar industry was born between the years of 1860-1870. By the time of the Civil War (1861-1865), rules and regulations, taxes, and licensing were put in place by the Federal government for the nearly 1500 factories in the United States. Many brands that we know of today have rich histories dating back just slightly before the Civil War in Cuba, Germany, England, Netherlands, and the United States. During the war, cigar smoking was very popular and was enjoyed by high ranking officers and enlisted men alike. At an average cost of five to ten cents per cigar, many indulged in this great pleasure.
Below are photos of an original cigar box and cigars that were captured by a Union soldier from Illinois during the Civil War.
The Battle of Gettysburg occurred on the first three days of July, 1863. If Davidus Cigars was in business back then, it's quite possible that the course of history could have had a different outcome. Rather than marching to the battlefield, soldiers like these would have enjoyed their cigars in our comfortable lounges.
