HPH Conference Update from former HF Minor Peyton Fort
|
The HPH conference went very well. Our workshop was well attended by people from over 7 different countries across Europe, North America, and Asia, and it was amazing to see the attendees come up with similar takeaways about the impact of design on health despite their vastly different backgrounds. It was a beautiful reminder of how design is such an incredible unifier as it is a deeply human experience we all share.
The rest of the conference was also fantastic! It’s always fascinating to meet healthcare leaders from around the world and realize we are all going through very similar challenges.
I thought the organizers also did a fantastic job of honoring the powerful history of Hiroshima throughout, once more emphasizing the need to progress towards a more equitable, empathetic, and peaceful world. We had time to visit the Peace memorial after the conference which was a very emotional and deeply humbling experience.
I am so grateful to you and CIHF for making this worldview enhancing experience possible, and I was proud to represent our shared mission throughout.
- Peyton Fort

Blue Space: Extracting the Sensory Characteristics of Waterscapes as a Potential Tool for Anxiety Mitigation
Co-authored by CIHF Academic Director Mardelle Shepley and CIHF Faculty Fellow, Anthony Ong, Professor in the Department of Psychology
|
The purpose of this study is to investigate if there is a physiological stress response to the visual and auditory characteristics of waterscapes. Biophilic research suggests that the presence of water can reduce stress, reduce blood pressure, and increase circulation. However, water has largely been omitted from healthcare design due to concerns of cost, maintenance, waterborne pathogens, and contamination. Existing research has not yet provided a design methodology to incorporate the healing effects of water without the potential diseases, contamination, and maintenance issues associated with physical water. Given the current technological capabilities, the isolation of the auditory and visual sensory stimuli has potential to re-introduce the healing benefits of water into healthcare design.

Circadian Effective Luminaire
Co-authored by CIHF Academic Scholar, Marie Elf, Associate Professor at Dalarna University at the Department of Nursing and at Chalmers University of Technology at the Department of Architecture
|
A luminaire includes a frame, an ambient light source positioned within the frame adjacent a first end of the frame, a downlight light source positioned within the frame adjacent a second end of the frame, a diffuser connected to the frame and at least partially surrounding the ambient light source, and a reflector configured to direct light emitted by the downlight light source. A first driver is in electrical communication with the ambient light source and is configured to adjust the illuminance of the ambient light source. A second driver is in electrical communication with the downlight light source and is configured to adjust the illuminance of the downlight light source. A controller is in electrical communication with and send control signals to the drivers to change the light sources between a plurality of illuminance modes, which includes a circadian effective mode and a circadian ineffective mode.
