Equity Town Hall
As you heard at last week’s Convocation, there will be a districtwide town hall meeting on Friday, August 28 from 9: AM to 10:30 AM to discuss our shared commitment to improving outcomes for historically underserved students at our colleges.
The town hall will feature our two new partners and “critical friends” in this work - Dr. Lasana Hotep and Dr. Cynthia Olivo - as we begin to focus our equity and social justice efforts on actionable and measurable steps we can take to improve the lives of our students. You can learn more about Dr. Hotep (bio) and Dr. Olivo (bio) by reading about their experience in advance of the town hall.
We hope that you will all join this important discussion via Zoom (the login information is below). We will also be streaming the town hall on the district’s Youtube channel for anyone who cannot login.

Sacramento City College is thrilled to announce the official launch of Starfish, a tool designed to accelerate our Guided Pathways work and help us support students more effectively and efficiently.
Starfish is a tool that allows us to quickly refer students to college student services, resources, and supports with the click of a button. It will also help us coordinate services between different departments and make it easier to follow-up with students. Starfish’s case management function will also make it easier than ever to communicate with students within a particular Meta Major. SCC is also piloting case management and early alert with our First Year Experience faculty, staff, and students. The feature that will make it easier for students to find the help they need at times that work for them, and we expect to roll out that functionality at SCC in the coming year.
For instructional faculty, Starfish offers a variety of benefits:
- Gives you a quick, easy way to provide meaningful feedback to students in your course, at any time
- Provides your students with earlier feedback and more opportunity to take action, especially if the student is struggling and needs help
- Allows you to easily track the feedback you’ve provided to your students over time
- Gives you the ability to share feedback with support staff who can help your students
- Allows you to refer students to appropriate resources without having to be an expert in every area - Starfish will connect students to those services through the referral feature
Logging into Starfish is easy - just look for the “Connect with Starfish” link in Canvas within your course menu options!
The launch of Starfish could not have happened without the great work of countless faculty, staff and our Student Experience Lifecycle (SEL) project leads who have been involved in the development of the tool since day one. We'll be providing more information directly to our early adopting teams about how to use Starfish in the weeks ahead. New District Logo and Style Guide
The Los Rios Community College District has updated its logo, wordmark and colors! It has been decades since our district last updated its brand and while this project began before the pandemic, it is fitting that we are modernizing our district’s brand identity at a time when we are reimagining our service to students and employees.
The updated wordmark is intentionally very similar to the past version, with one significant improvement. The intentional accentuation of the word “Community” in the name is a reference to our organizational commitment to inclusion and improving outcomes for historically underserved communities. The diverse student focus group that provided feedback during the logo development process had a very favorable opinion of that shift. The new logo itself is a simple mark representing the rivers in our region referenced in our district’s name.
In addition to the new logo, we have updated our colors and brand style guide, which provides guidance for using the logo in various settings and formats.
