On July 30th, Colonial IU 20 held a virtual graduation ceremony to honor the 500 graduates of its Early Intervention program. "We can't wait to see what these amazing young learners accomplish at the next level. The Colonial IU 20 Early Intervention program serves children aged 3 to 5 and their families by providing special education services including specialized instruction, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
Extended School Year Program Readies Students for New School Year
This July, Colonial Intermediate Unit 20 held its annual Extended School Year (ESY) program virtually for over 300 students. During ESY, children receive specialized instruction from various CIU 20 team members, such as Special Education Teachers, Associate Teachers, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists.

The goal of ESY is to assist students with special needs in maintaining skills or behaviors relevant to the goals and objectives as part of the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Students become eligible for ESY services as determined by their IEP team. Each week's activities are built around a common theme.

New Online Referral System for Student Services Goes Live
Colonial IU 20 has launched a new, streamlined online referral system for member districts and the community to utilize to request services. The modernized system is the result of planning with stakeholders and piloting variations of the form with Northampton Area and Pleasant Valley School Districts. For each type of referral, the form is customized to require submission of all necessary information and supporting documents. The form can be accessed on the front page of the Colonial IU 20 website: www.ciu20.org.

During the 2018-2019 school year, CIU 20 formed a focus group to explore options to streamline and standardize the referral process. CIU 20 representatives gathered information from member districts, neighboring IU’s, and technology vendors. In the summer of 2019, the team developed an electronic form using an online form builder and the first pilot was launched in November 2019.
IU Creates Infection Control Training for Member Districts
Colonial IU 20 Supervisor of Health and Nursing Services, Ms. Christina Williams RN, has created a virtual training titled "Infection Control: Strategies for a Healthy Workplace" that is available for member districts to use at no cost. The training is about an hour long and features recommendations and strategies for safely returning to the in-person working / classroom environment. All Colonial IU 20 employees have completed the training before returning for the school year. Please contact Ms. Williams to gain access to the training or if you have any other questions: cwilliams1@ciu20.org.
