This month's theme is flowers!

In this month's newsletter, we would like to share some flowers-themed ideas and fun activities that your family may enjoy participating in and completing.

These are some suggestions for activities for you to try along with your child. We understand every child is at varying levels in the skill areas. If your child is not yet engaging in the activities independently, please use exposure, modeling, and/or shaping to modify and adapt the activities for your individual child.

Activities to help build language and communication

Grow Flower, Grow! Read Aloud Book

Strategies:

Attention: Go on a picture walk! This is for those children who can not sit for a whole story. Talk about the pictures rather than reading all the words on the pages.
Core Language: Have your Core Word Board out to allow your child to request for turning pages by saying/pointing to "turn" or to ask you to look by saying or pointing to "look."
Receptive Language: Name different pictures on the page and encourage your child to point to each picture.
Expressive Language: Ask your child “What’s this?” while pointing to pictures on the page.
Engaging in the story: Use stuffed animals, objects, and other related items from the story to help your child make connections.

Activities to help develop sensory and self-help skills

Frozen Flowers

Materials:

Muffin pan
Flowers
Droppers
Water

Directions:

Collect flowers from your yard or neighborhood
Arrange flowers in muffin tin
Add water to each muffin cup
Fill them up as much as you’d like. The flowers will mostly float to the top.
Freeze, for a few hours, until frozen
Once frozen, take out the frozen flowers cubes
Add some warm water to a bowl
Use a dropper to put some warm water on the flower cubes

Activities to help develop social and emotional skills

The Emotions Book : A Little Story About BIG Feelings by Liz Fletcher | Read Aloud

A great book about big feelings. Read along with the story, and talk with your child about their own feelings afterward

Activities to build cognitive skills

Paper Clip Leaf Counting

Materials needed:

- Paper flowers numbered 1-5

- Glue

- Popsicle sticks

- Paper clips

To set up this activity, have your child assist you with attaching the flower cutouts to popsicle sticks. Write the numbers 1 to 5 on each flower. Invite your child to push paper clips onto the popsicle stick as leaves according to the numbers on the flowers. This is also a great activity to work on their fine motor skills!
