The VALHEN (
Virginia Latino Higher Education Network
) scholarship program is dedicated to assist Latinx/Hispanic students to pursue higher education within the Commonwealth of Virginia. Scholarship awards are for one-year and will be paid directly to the recipient’s college or university to cover tuition, books, and/or fees.
Application Opens:
Nov. 15th, 2019
Priority Application Review will begin on December 15, 2019
Application Deadline:
January 15th @ 5pm
Awarded:
March 2020
Application Must:
- Be of Latinx/Hispanic Heritage
- Live in Virginia
- Have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
- Be a high school senior or graduate of Virginia high school and either have been accepted or to be enrolled as a full time student, in degree-granting public or private Virginia college or university.
- Be able to demonstrate leadership through involvement in school and in the community, government, non-profit organization, work/job duties, or in another manner not mentioned here.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Essays of 300-500 words are required of all applicants

“When I look back… Sometimes we think about the community as one thing. But in reality, it’s one person, like you as a person… I was able to find kind people and that gave me a sense of community.”
|
For this month’s Latinx Spotlight, I was able to interview Ingrid Ramos, director of Bienestar & Resilience programs in The Women's Initiative. She’s also one of our board members for Creciendo Juntos.
Her work in the community has been focused on moving our Latinx communities forward in healing and raising awareness for mental health resources within Charlottesville. For many years, her resilience and passion in working with understanding trauma and healing has made her a trusted and loved individual
I was able to sit down with her at her office just before the holiday week.
Ingrid received her bachelor’s degree from the
Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago
in Dominican Republic. She later on went to her master’s degree in Liberty University.
This brought me to ask her what brought her to Charlottesville? All the way from Dominican Republic?
“Let’s start with how I [arrived] to United States. When I was in my country back then, I was an account first.” She began. “After having some work experiences… I realized that I wanted to shift career so that I could be someone that helps people more directly” She emphasizes that she believes that we can help people from any [backgrounds] regardless of what’s their passion or who they love.

“However, at that time, I was trying to figure out what resonated with me, my passion, and staying true to myself…” She explains that this led her into pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology later on. “By the time that I [completed] my bachelor’s psychology, my husband received an opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in guitar performance as well as an assistantship program in Shenandoah University.”
This has opened up many doors as well for Ingrid. Soon, Ingrid found herself in the area of Winchester, Virginia. This prompted her into seeking for an online program that will allow her to continue pursuing her master’s while still being able to travel to the university whenever needed. She found Liberty University to be her best option.
After I heard that she had to navigate through these education systems in different countries, I asked her what the experience was like for her.
I made a comment about how difficult and intimidating it seems and she agreed immediately. “At the beginning… It sounded like I had a clear path, but I had headaches.” She laughed. “I had to figure out where can I go, where can I study, the legal requirements… It just depends on how you arrive [in the United States] that will affect where you can work or where you can study.”

PART-TIME BILINGUAL MENTAL HEALTH THERAPIST - The Women's Initiative
|
The Women's Initiative are seeking a Part-Time Bilingual Mental Health Therapist (Spanish/English) to provide compassionate clinical care for 10-20 hours a week in the Bienestar Program for Latina women. Successful candidates will have a minimum of one year of experience as a master’s-level counselor or social worker and be team-oriented with a strengths-based approach to services. They are seeking a candidate who is passionate about working with women of all backgrounds and has a demonstrated interest in multicultural issues with an emphasis on those affecting the Latino community.
Candidates who also have excellent skills in writing and public speaking will be considered for additional responsibilities with the Bienestar Program’s other offerings (social support, community outreach, psychoeducation) and marketing needs. The Women’s Initiative is committed to building a diverse workforce and encourages candidates from underrepresented backgrounds to apply. EOE. Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work required. Licensed or license-eligible required.

BIENESTAR SUPPORT SPECIALIST - The Women's
Initiative

We are seeking a Bienestar Support Specialist to coordinate community outreach, social support, psychoeducation, and marketing for our Bienestar Program for Latina women 5-10 hours a week. Successful candidates will have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish, be team-oriented, be passionate about working with women of all backgrounds, and have a demonstrated interest in multicultural issues with an emphasis on those affecting the Latino community.

INTERNSHIP - Cville Immigrant Bond Fund
|
|
The Cville Immigrant Bond Fund is currently seeking an intern for 5-10 hours a week to further our mission of supporting immigrants in paying legal defense and ICE bond. This person should be bilingual, familiar with the impacted community, highly responsible and, dedicated to the work that we do. Responsibilities include: community outreach; management of applications for support (including a dedicated phone/whats app line); some administrative tasks and, if the person has 10 hours, assisting the coordinator of CIRAC's transportation network that provides rides to immigration court, check-ins, local appointments.
They would report to and work most closely with our volunteer Executive Director but would also be included in the full spectrum of our activities. Contact Priscilla Mendenhall at
