D'VAR KESHER:
Kvelling and Super-Kvelling
|
|
Greetings!
My wife Elaine and I moved to Columbus four years ago. We have yet to assume our own identities, as we are forever introduced as Katie Feldstein’s parents. That’s fine with us. We kvell (a Yiddish word meaning “Go, Katie!”) every time that happens. We consider ourselves a multi-generational CJDS family because Katie herself is a product of the day school education we helped make possible, and for those of you who know our grandson Sam (super-kvell) he has gained so much from his education here.

When Katie was entering kindergarten, I was the CEO of the Jewish Federation of New Bedford, Massachusetts. There was no day school there, but we enrolled Katie at the Solomon Schechter Day School in Providence, Rhode Island. It was only one state away. For her first year Katie spent an hour and a half commuting back and forth to Providence, because it was that important to us. When a job opened up in Toledo, I grabbed it, due in no small part to the Hebrew Academy being available there.
Flash forward: Katie is now celebrating her 18th Chai year as your first grade Hebrew teacher at CJDS. But enough with Katie. Let’s get on to what really motivated us to move here: Sam.
From the annual art project refrigerator magnet, Sam has progressed to be “cartoonist extraordinaire” for the CJDS newsletter. His education here in engineering and environmental studies has flourished in both Minecraft at home and recycling here at the school. He has learned poise and presentation from numerous theatrical performances at kabbalat Shabbat; generosity from Tzedakah Club; and I never have to remember the lesson of this week’s parsha. I just ask Sam. In short, an outstanding foundation in both Judaic and secular studies.
Needless to say, Elaine and I are big fans.
We hope you will consider giving back to this wonderful school, as we have in both our time and financial commitment. Whether it is serving hot lunch, giving a financial gift, or reading a book in the classroom, the CJDS community will welcome you with open arms, and I know you’ll find it as rewarding as Elaine and I do. And your grandchild or special CJDS friend, along with all the students, benefit so greatly from your involvement. If you are interested, or have any questions, please contact any of the administration staff.
Finally, Elaine and I have provided for CJDS in our will. As JewishColumbus and CJDS prepare to launch new initiatives in this arena, we hope you will consider the same.
We salute the administration, teachers, staff and all of you parents and grandparents for being part of this Community, for your decision to send your child here, and for your constant support.
I am looking forward to kvelling with all the other special friends and grandparents of CJDS students next Tuesday November 20, at Community Day!
Shabbat Shalom,
Steve Edelstein (Zaydie)

From our community to yours...
A Gift to Community Day School of Pittsburgh
|
|
Last Friday, we held a very special Kabbalat Shabbat Assembly with guest Pastor Frank Luchsinger who spoke to our community about standing together in solidarity against hatred and anti-Semitism, and celebrating the value and beauty of diversity. The congregants of New Albany United Methodist Church presented CJDS with a collection of prayers, drawings and notes of care, strength and support. Click
HERE to see these beautiful messages from our caring neighbors.
During our assembly CJDS presented a gift, of a student created tapestry, for our friends at Community Day School, in Pittsburgh. Pictured above, Adam Baron, son of CJDS Kindergarten teacher, Annelyn Baron, and also a parent from Community Day School, joined us. Adam, along with his children, Brett and Tatum, accepted our gift and personally delivered our cards and the tapestry to Community Day School, where the tapestry will hang as a symbol of our love and friendship. At CJDS, we have a matching tapestry on our wall.
The CJDS Tzedekah Club students raised money for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.
Ginna Rinkov, Chief Operating Officer of
JewishColumbus, joined us for the event and promised to send the funds to the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh.

THANKSGIVING DRIVE
CJDS Tzedekah Club is Collecting Items
for the Mid Ohio Food Bank
|
|
A half million folks in Central Ohio suffer from hunger and 180,000 of them are children.
The Mid Ohio food bank sent us a flyer
letting us know what kinds of foods would really help. They also shared that our community members have other needs that they can’t get funded from any government agency.
We were surprised to learn that
diapers
were on the top of the list of most needed items.
|
|
The list also includes chili with beans, tuna, canned vegetables, canned meat, soup with vegetable, peanut butter, canned fruit (in light corn syrup), deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste. Tzedakah club members would like to ask YOU to help fill these needs. There will be boxes for your donations in the lobby and outside the Art Room (AKA Tzedakah Club House). We will be collecting from now until Community Day (November 20th). Thank you for helping us to make a difference!

HAKARAT HATOV
The Hebrew term for gratitude is הַכָּרַת הַטוֹב (Hakarat HaTov), which means "recognizing the good."
To
Eran Rosenberg,
Susan Couden and
Annelyn Baron for their support in the planning of CJDS Community Day.
|
|
LIFECYCLES In our community, at every point, our families are perpetually entering new stages in their lives. In keeping with the tradition of living Jewishly, CJDS acknowledges, honors, and celebrates these moments: Births, B’nei Mitzvah, graduations, marriages, and in moments of illness, healing and loss.
|
|
MI SH'BERACH When a member of the CJDS family is ill or in need of healing, the entire community lends its support and its prayers for a full and complete recovery.
We wish our CJDS dear friend and community volunteer,
Steve Shkolnik, a speedy recovery.

KESHER: CJDS Parent Organization
|

HOT LUNCH
As in the past, we are so grateful to all the help from the community members - grandparents, friends, parents, and others – on whom we rely to serve hot lunch to our students. Our volunteers bring such a warmth and love to our students and we love having all of you! In order to make this sign-up process even more smooth this year, we would love each family (any family member or friend) to sign up for two dates during the whole year to serve lunch. It can be a parent, a grandparent, a special friend - anyone who is interested in spending time with our wonderful students and serving them food.
|
|
KESHER
CJDS is proud to have a Parent Organization called Kesher (Hebrew for "connection"). Kesher has a team of grade representatives led by a president.
Kesher is responsible for the CJDS Hot Lunch program, social gatherings outside of school, teacher appreciation, the CJDS Chesed committee and more! To get involved, please be in touch HERE.
