Long Island Report | February 2021
News from Climate Jobs New York
It was a busy month for offshore wind and labor, so let's get right to it!
Thank You to All Who Turned Out to Support the South Fork Wind Project

Long Island Labor had over 40 union members submit oral and written comments for the South Fork Wind Project's draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) during the federal review process. We had a wide range of support within the labor movement, including NYSUT, the Laborers, Elevator Constructors Local 1, CSEA, Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, IBEW Locals 3, 25, and 1049, Suffolk AME, TWU Local 501, Sheet Metal Workers Local 28 and more. Big thanks to the LI Federation of Labor and the Nassau/Suffolk Building Trades for their support in organizing this effort. Please see CJNY's written statements here.

Additionally, Rep. Tom Suozzi led a LI delegation letter of support for South Fork's DEIS. Please see the delegation letter here.
Representatives Rice, Pascrell Lead NY and NJ Delegations Letter Calling for Federal Action on Offshore Wind Development

Climate Jobs NY, along with our environmental and industry partners worked with Rep. Rice's office to reinvigorate the effort for new wind energy areas in the NY Bight. With New Yorker Amanda Lefton leading the agency in charge of leasing, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and a pro-worker, pro-offshore wind Biden Administration, we are hopeful to have new WEAs far off Long Island's shores by the end of this year. Please see the press release here.

Here's more coverage of the delegation's letter:

A LI Climate Change & Offshore Wind Training is Coming to a Local Near You
CJNY's Education Fund hosted its first 2021 Long Island Climate Change and Offshore Wind Training in coordination with Cornell's Worker Institute. We had over 30 union members join to learn the science behind climate change, how New York is leading on climate and the importance of the labor movement helping drive responsible offshore wind development. If you're interested in participating in a future training, please fill out this Google Form.
"Green Energy Can Put the Wind in Long Island's Sails"

Newsday's Editorial Board wrote an excellent piece on offshore wind and the potential it brings to Long Island. I've said it before and will say it again, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to ensure that our path to a low-carbon future also creates good family-sustaining careers. The editorial board highlighted what the offshore wind industry can bring including the opportunity to train the workforce of the very near future. Please see the full editorial.
In solidarity,
