CJNY Co-Hosts "Rally for Public Solar Power"

On Thursday, September 14th Climate Jobs NY joined with Councilmember Sandy Nurse and Climate Works for All to co-host a “Rally for Public Solar Power.” Support for the bill was bolstered by Councilmembers Carmen De La Rosa and Pierina Sanchez, as well as with remarks from CJNY Executive Director Lenore Friedlaender. Additionally, Laborers Local 79 member Robert Brunotte spoke on behalf of the CJNY coalition and his union to emphasize the legislation’s focus on creating good, union jobs while also striving to make our buildings a key component in the fight against climate change.

Councilmember Nurse’s bill targets increased solar panel installation on public buildings in NYC. The legislation has the potential to expand power delivered from city-owned buildings to the tune of 100 Megawatts by 2025. This initiative has the capacity to save the city millions of dollars in energy costs while also cutting carbon pollution substantially. And to make it happen, the city can create numerous high-quality union jobs.

President Biden Announces American Climate Corps

On Wednesday, September 20th President Biden announced the launch of the American Climate Corps. This initiative seeks to develop workforce training and job programs for over 20,000 Americans in the fashion of the New Deal-era Civilian Conservation Corps. The program will: coordinate recruitment and outreach efforts across Federal departments, train and engage youth with clean energy, conservation, and climate resilience experiences, and invest strongly in pre-apprenticeship programs via funding from the DOL and the DOE. The American Climate Corps strives to facilitate a faster, more just transition to a renewable energy economy while also building resilient communities that begin to address the racial inequities produced by climate change.
