Riverdale Food Pantry
Donations Needed

Sowing Empowerment and Economic Development, Inc. (SEED) has been serving residents of Riverdale through The SEED Food Distribution Center for 10 years. CKAR recently spoke with Housing Counselor Julia Sarmiento who shared with us that the service naturally grew out of the non profit organizations housing counseling services, which aim to provide home ownership education and foreclosure prevention education. Each family has a different story that leads them to the pantry for food donations. Some people arrive to the pantry on an irregular basis due to unstable work in the construction industry, others have medical conditions that are either chronic or sudden, which thrust them into needing outside support and are consistent monthly visitors. Oftentimes, a family may visit because, while they just managed to pay their bills and mortgage, the money did not stretch for groceries that month. Older individuals may only live on their retirement income and social security, and again need to supplement their food budget. Everyone's story is different, yet we are all so similar because of our vulnerability to circumstances out of our control that can change our lives in just one day!

SEED Board Member Alice Bishop says, "SEED has a compassionate vision with strong leadership that encourages local support, advocacy and empowerment to accomplish its goals." SEED plans to renovate and expand the pantry in order to add additional shelving, classroom space and a cooking and wash station that will provide nutritional cooking demonstrations and health education classes.  This will be accomplished through partnerships with the University of Maryland's Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and, with support from the Capital Area Food Bank.  Historically, SEED's health initiative has been ever present through its efforts in conducting a community health survey, as a Capital Area Food Bank Fresh Produce grant recipient andhealth educational partnerships with the University of Maryland and Dimensions Healthcare. Recently, SEED was successful in holding a 4 week series of interactive and culturally appropriate health workshops facilitated to groups by Nutrition Assistants trained in nutrition concepts and community-based education. Participants learned about basic food groups, nutritious food choices, ideas for meal preparation, food safety and storage practices, smart snacking, physical activity, and improving diet for a healthier lifestyle for individuals and families. At the conclusion of the series, participants received a certificate of completion and a bag of food items. Without a doubt, this expansion and initiative will continue to provide a much needed service of well-being and food to our community.

The pantry is located across the street from the Refreshing Springs Church of God In Christ Church on Riverdale Road at 6201Riverdale Road. The entrance to the food pantry is located on the first floor of the building and may be accessed by parking behind the building and entering through the back door. The pantry is open every Wednesday and Friday from 12pm-3pm in the afternoon.  The pantry accepts packaged food donations year round, but experiences a huge surge in clients during the holiday season.   Please contact Avery Jones at SEED at 301-458-9808, ext.127 or ajones@seedinc.org to arrange a donation drop off, a volunteer opportunity or learn how you can help to donate renovation materials.
