CKDF's Founder Jake Norwood took a small crew camping in early October. The focus of the weekend get away was to truly experience what it meant to be a late 15th century lance. Participants had to hike fully loaded with armor, select weaponry, shelter and cooking implements, food and water supplies. There are rumblings of making these excursions semi-regular approaching each trip with a series of clear questions that can be adequately tested and experienced. Charles Lin has created a few
posts
with the group's initial observations.
Historic Knightly Physical Training was a huge hit. Thank you Charles for planning the event, and a giant thank you to David Kalinowski for hosting, building obstacles, and providing the heavy items needed to make the day a success. Participants marched, ran, jumped, vaulted, and wrestled all before lunch. Following a light fair of bread, jerky, cheese, and water our knights in training were right back at it with another light march followed by sling training, rock tossing, and javelin throwing. Photos and videos can be found on the Facebook
event page
.
Guest instructor James Riley lead a riveting class on the 5 words with the Monday crew. James is the principle instructor at the Wisconsin Historical Fencing Association. Resource links are available for further reading.
Sunday October 20th CKDF hosted Jess Rozek-Workmen from MKDF. Jess' class focused heavily on Joachim Meyer's Longsword interpretations and their influences in early KDF. Much fun and heretical experimentation was had by all who attended.

Gear - Weapons: Building your Armory
|
|
To simplify and consolidate the research needed prior to purchasing practice weapons we have compiled a list of our preferred manufacturers and models. We will have a separate breakout for sharps as these can be a serious investment.
We highly encourage you to talk to your fellow club members prior to purchasing items for your armory. There’s a lot of collective knowledge at CKDF so ask away! Training equipment can a be large investment so it only makes sense to be sure about an item prior to purchase. As a general recommendation,
Purpleheart Armory does a great job of
of keeping modern HEMA gear and training weapons in stock and is a perfect place to start your research.
Longswords
The general recommendation: longer isn't necessarily better. Try to stick with a blade length 36" or less and a handle of 10" or less. Club recommended manufacturers are below in rough order of ascending price.
Rapier
Below are the go to choices for Rapier. Both come recommended based on price and durability. Popular choices are their Economy models.
Messer
There are a couple of options for Messer however VB's rendition is the current favorite for both price, durability, and flexibility when sparring.
Broadsword
Montante
Synthetic Dagger
The club uses
Cold Steel Rondels for their Tuesday class. There are plenty available for use in our weapons locker.
Polearms
CKDF has a medley of loaners purchased through Purpleheart Armory.
