Media Mentions, summer 2023, part I

CLA media mentions were in full swing over the summer, starting with some inspiring CLA-focused graduation stories. SOC professor and Cambodian Student Society advisor Leakhena Nou was central in an LAist story about CSULB’s Cambodian graduation ceremony; the piece was later aired by almost 300 other public radio stations across the country. Meanwhile, SOC associate professors Steven Osuna and Esa Syeed were quoted in a KNBC piece about Joseph Valadez, a SOC alum who recently received a master’s degree in social work. Other early summer media mentions include a Reuters story connected to JOUR professor Gwen Shaffer’s recent $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation for her digital privacy research; PSY lecturer Marwa Azab’s analysis of why some people of color are attracted to white supremacy in an LAist article; and JOUR lecturer and Daily 49er advisor Barbara Kingsley-Wilson's commentary on AirTalk about layoffs in the journalism industry. This just scratches the surface of CLA summer public intellectual activity; the Monday Memo will feature more media mentions in the coming weeks.
