Tinker Talks: Spring 2020

Our 2019 Tinker Fellows will be presenting at various Tinker Talks in the upcoming weeks! This is a chance for them to share their research and knowledge attained from their experiences abroad.

Global Comics Lecture Series: Dr. José Alaniz

On January 30 (4-5:30 PM), Dr. José Alaniz, professor at the University of Washington, will present a brief overview of the situation for people with disabilities in Russia after the 1991 collapse of communism as depicted by non-disabled and disabled comics artists, with an emphasis on the Putin era.

Interactive seminar: Dr. Adam Schwartz

On February 7 (2:20-3:40 PM in Mendenhall Lab 115), Dr. Adam Schwartz will lead an interactive seminar entitled, "The weight of 'native-ness' and unspoken Whiteness: Lessons from race talk with White-identified Spanish professors". This seminar will explore how Spanish language education is historically racialized and sanitized to fortify the White supremacist architecture of U.S. universities.

Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants Competition is open!

The Center for Latin American Studies is accepting applications from graduate and professional students for Tinker Foundation Field Research Grants. These grants provide students with funds for travel to and within Latin America to conduct pre-dissertation research. Application are due Sunday, March 1, 2020.

Call for Papers: LASPP

The University of Pittsburgh's 24th Latin American Social and Public Policy Conference (LASPP) will take place on March 27-28. The call for papers goes until February 24th and includes a broad range of topics within social sciences and humanities. They are particularly interested in the discussion of policy design, implementation, and impact in a wide array of areas, including: Economic development; inequality and social inclusion; democratic governance and institutional change; human rights; health; education; ethnicity; race studies, and so on.
