2021 Boren Awards

All Boren Awards-funded programs must include language study as a core element for the duration of the grant. Applicants are encouraged to select or design programs that will provide an immersive environment both in the classroom and through extracurricular activities in order to demonstrate their commitment to language study.

Boren Scholars (undergraduate) should seek study abroad programs that have a serious language component. Language study should comprise the majority of overseas coursework. Beyond the classroom, language immersion may take place in university housing with local students, in homestays with local families, or through research or volunteering conducted in the local language. The deadline is Feb. 3, 2021.

Boren Fellows (graduate) must have a serious language component in their overseas study proposals. This is the only required element, so proposals to enroll in a traditional language program will be sufficient. Graduate students are encouraged to simultaneously pursue research relevant to their degrees, additional academic coursework, and/or internships. Graduate students may also supplement their overseas study with private tutoring. The deadline is Jan. 27, 2021.

Quechua and Portuguese are both eligible languages for the Boren Awards.

OSUCHiLL 2020 Virtual Event

The Spanish & Portuguese Colloquium and OSUCHiLL 2020 are excited to announce the OSUCHiLL 2020 keynote speaker, Dr. Whitney Chappell (University of Texas at San Antonio) on Friday, October 30. The presentation, titled "Confronting our own linguistic biases: An exploration of heritage speakers’ sociophonetic perception", deals with how linguistic research can be a valuable tool to counter linguistic discrimination. This event is open to the public.

Boundless Theater Company presents "Adiós, Flora"

From October 20-24, The Boundless Theater Company will be presenting "Adiós, Flora" virtually! This tragicomedy presents the life of Flora, a nurse who, during the pandemic, seems to be living the worst moment of her life. She just got divorced and is about to lose her job at the hospital. To make matters worse, Flora has begun to feel ill and no longer knows how to handle her crisis. But her destiny will change with the arrival of the patient from room 26. This mystical character will serve as a guide for Flora to rediscover what is truly important in this life. With performances of the Puerto Rican actors María Bertólez, Laura Isabel Cabrera and Gerardo Ortiz, all under the direction of Ismanuel Rodríguez.

Critical Language Scholarship 2021 Application Now Open!

Applications are now being accepted for the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program for intensive language study abroad in summer 2021. The CLS Program is a fully-funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages, Portuguese included. Applications are due Tuesday, November 17, 2020 by 8:00pm EST.

Pachaysana Workshop Series- Epistemic Justice Workshop #2

The Epistemic Justice Workshop #2 will take place on October 23 from 9:30-11 AM. This workshop explores epistemic justice from "embodiment," referring to our bodies as sources of knowledge and ways of expressing knowledge.

Although it is encouraged, you do not need to participate in every workshop of the series. See below a full list of workshop sessions:
