FLAS 2021-2022 Competition is now live!

The Center for Latin American Studies is now accepting applications for its Summer 2021 and Academic Year 2021-2022 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship Competitions. The fellowship seeks to enhance students' language skills and knowledge of a foreign country or region through coursework. Fellows receive a tuition and fee credit to subsidize enrollment in language and/or area studies coursework as well as receiving a stipend. CLAS offers fellowships for Portuguese, Quechua, and other pre-approved Latin American languages.

The deadline for application submission is Monday, February 1, 2021, 4:30 p.m. EST.

CLAS Assistant Director Position Open

CLAS assistant director, Megan Hasting, has accepted a new position as program manager for the Professional Development team at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs. Her last official day with CLAS was October 30. We are now looking for a new assistant director for the center and the position has just been posted. Call For Papers: 53rd Annual NCCLA Conference

The North Central Council of Latin Americanists (NCCLA), with the College of St. Benedict & St. John's University, is hosting the 53rd Annual NCCLA Conference entitled, Racism, Pandemics, and Other Struggles for Latinxs and Latin America. The conference will take place April 18-19, 2021 in a fully remote setting. They encourage proposals addressing the pandemic as well as proposals focusing on issues related to racism and anti-racism actions in the Latinx community and in Latin America. The organization invites proposals for panels, round tables, and papers from all disciplines that highlight salient topics in Latin American History, Politics, Anthropology, Art, Music, Economics, Literature, and more. The deadline to submit a proposal is January 10, 2021.

Apply Now To The FY 2021 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program!

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program (SA) provides U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities with opportunities to participate in short-term seminars abroad to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. In 2021, summer seminars will be offered in Iceland, Morocco, and Mexico. The application deadline is Dec. 18, 2020.

AATSP celebrates National Teach Portuguese Week

The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) is hosting a webinar for National Teach Portuguese Week called, "Prácticas Inovadoras no Ensino de Português". It will be held on November 5 at 7 PM EST, via Zoom. It will feature Jéssica Bell'Aver (Bluffdale Elementary School) and Dr. Eduardo Viana da Silva (University of Washington). 2021 Boren Awards

All Boren Awards-funded programs must include language study as a core element for the duration of the grant. Applicants are encouraged to select or design programs that will provide an immersive environment both in the classroom and through extracurricular activities in order to demonstrate their commitment to language study. Quechua and Portuguese are both eligible languages.

The deadline for Boren Scholars (undergraduate) is Feb. 3, 2021.
The deadline for Boren Fellows (graduate) is Jan. 27, 2021.

Critical Language Scholarship 2021 Application is Open!

Applications are now being accepted for the U.S. Department of State’s Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program for intensive language study abroad in summer 2021. The CLS Program is a fully-funded intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages, Portuguese included. Applications are due Tuesday, November 17, 2020 by 8:00pm EST.
