Virtual Portuguese K-12 Workshop

The Center for Latin American Studies is excited to host our first virtual Portuguese K-12 workshop for educators on Friday, December 4! Led by Patricia Sobral, Distinguished Senior Lecturer in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University, and Michele Saraiva Carilo, Coordinator of Portuguese Language Program and Lecturer at The Ohio State University, this 3 hour workshop will offer the following, with time for Q&A:

• Content for the whole K-12 spectrum on integrating art in Portuguese language teaching.
• Focus on intercultural competence and offer strategies to adapt and develop pedagogical materials in order to expand the understanding of culture and move it beyond the notion of nationality.

(In)Visibles: Personal Identity and Social Inclusion

UCLA's Center for Brazilian Studies, Latin American Institute, and Department of Spanish and Portuguese are hosting a debate about civil registration and inclusion in Latin America on November 24, 1PM PST.

Latin America has achieved encouraging results in addressing the under-registration of births. However, access to personal documentation continues to be a barrier for vulnerable groups. Without identification papers, individuals cannot access basic public services and their fundamental rights are violated. Does this supposed invisibility benefit State bureaucracy? What is the role documents play on inclusion and exclusion of people? How to identify individuals in digital platforms while protecting their privacy? These and other questions will guide our debate about civil registration and inclusion in Latin America.

Richard E. Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar competition is now open!

The Latin American & Iberian Institute (LAII) at the University of New Mexico is pleased to announce that the Richard E. Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholar competition is now open! Recipients of the award work to promote scholarly use of the Latin American and Iberian collections, focusing on objectives with specific relevance to the UNM Library collections. Scholars will have the opportunity to present their research to faculty and students during their visit to UNM and to submit a brief report. The LAII will assist awardees in identifying and networking with UNM scholars in relevant fields.

Applications are due March 31, 2021.

3rd International Symposium for ILCLA

This year, The University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute will host the 3rd International Symposium for Indigenous Languages and Cultures of Latin America (ILCLA). This event will bring together indigenous leaders, instructors, scholars, and community activists from around the world for a virtual forum on the indigenous languages and cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean. The symposium will be held on March 19-20 and March 26-27, 2021 and will be FREE and open to the public.

We invite proposals for a wide range of topics related to indigenous languages and peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, with special thematic tracks on indigenous public health, environmental justice, and virtual indigenous language instruction. The deadline to submit a proposal is December 15, 2020.
