2019 FLAS Reception Highlight

On November 7, 2019. Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellows from The Ohio State University were honored for their achievements at the 2019 FLAS Reception. The Center for Latin American Studies has awarded 19 FLAS Fellowships for the 2019-2020 Academic Year, representing $407,124 of funding for students studying Quechua, Kichwa, and Portuguese. Ten graduate and professional students received the fellowship, in addition to nine undergraduate students. Congratulations fellows!

CLAS Welcomes Patricia Vocal!

The Center for Latin American Studies is excited to announce its new Outreach Coordinator, Patricia Vocal! Patricia earned her B.A. in English and Psychology, with minors in Spanish and Community Service Studies from DePaul University. She earned her M.Ed. in Foreign Language Education (Spanish) through the ASPIRE Program at The Ohio State University and has taught Spanish for several years in Columbus, OH. She is pursuing her PhD in Education (Literature for Children and Young Adults), focusing on Latinidad, identity and mental health. Welcome to CLAS, Patricia!

OLAC 2nd Call for Proposals

The Department of Modern Languages at Ohio University, Athens is to host the 17th annual Ohio Latin Americanist Conference (OLAC). All Latin Americanists and Latinx Studies scholars, educators, and students from institutions of higher education are invited to participate in this annual meeting. All proposals are welcome and may include (but are not limited to) literature, linguistics, history, education, geography, political science, etc. The deadline to submit proposals is December 6, 2019. This year's conference will take place on February 28-29, 2020 at Ohio University and will feature guest speaker Dr. Brenda Elsey, Associate Professor of History at Hofstra University. In addition, free entertainment will be offered Friday night to include music and the presentation of a play. SPAN 2389: Spanish in the USA

Are you interested in understanding and analyzing the way language and ethnicity are discussed in the media today? If so, you may want to consider taking Spanish 2389 this Spring! This course will focus on connecting theoretical tools to social patterns, with a strong emphasis on current media and culture. This course fulfills the GE Social Science-Individual & Groups and GE Social Diversity in the US requirements. HIST 2125: The History of Latin America Through Film

This online course explores Latin American history from the pre-colonial era to the present as depicted in film, including the analysis of colonialism, revolutions, society, women, and current events. It fulfills the GE Historical Study and GE Diversity: Global Studies requirements. Area Studies Centers Conference Grant program now accepting proposals

The Ohio State University Area Studies Centers are accepting proposals from OSU faculty members for the OIA Area Studies Centers Conference Grants program. To further develop and enhance area studies research and dialogue at Ohio State, this grant competition seeks proposals for conferences focusing on the study of global issues from interdisciplinary, multi-regional perspectives. Brief pre-proposals are to be submitted online by January 3, 2020.

The Center for Latin American Studies at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for fellowships for Summer 2020 and Academic Year 2020-2021 under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program. These fellowships are available to all full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at all levels and in any department who are pursuing a course of study which requires advanced foreign language and area studies training. We highly encourage that you attend one of our information sessions if you are considering applying for this fellowship.
