K-12 Teacher Training Workshop

On January 23, 2020, The Center for Latin American Studies will be hosting a FREE teacher training workshop, as part of our "Latin America in the K-12 classroom" initiative. In this workshop, teachers will learn in-depth cultural content, pedagogical strategies for the teaching of pronunciation, and have the opportunity to apply this information to the (re)design of a unit or lesson plan. The registration deadline is Monday, January 20, 2020.

The Wexner's Viva Kids Mix!

The Wexner Center for the Arts is hosting its annual Zoom: Family Film Festival this weekend (Dec. 6-8). For a low price, you can enjoy a great lineup of films and fun activities for the kids, including a pajama party, ice cream social, and more! This year, they are introducing the Viva Kids Mix! series to celebrate Spanish-language and Latino-themed stories from around the globe. This event is perfect for young kids, or anyone with a young heart!

SPANISH 6194: Spanish Phonetics for Teachers

Taught by Dr. Terrell Morgan, this is a comprehensive study of the sound system of Spanish, as well as preparation for, and practice in, the teaching of pronunciation. The online course covers the principles of orthography, articulatory descriptions of sounds, phonetic transcription, phonological analysis, contrasts with English, issues in L2 phonological research, and best practices in the teaching of Spanish pronunciation to English speakers. OLAC 2nd Call for Proposals

The Department of Modern Languages at Ohio University, Athens is to host the 17th annual Ohio Latin Americanist Conference (OLAC). All Latin Americanists and Latinx Studies scholars, educators, and students from institutions of higher education are invited to participate in this annual meeting. All proposals are welcome and may include (but are not limited to) literature, linguistics, history, education, geography, political science, etc. The deadline to submit proposals is December 6, 2019. This year's conference will take place on February 28-29, 2020 at Ohio University and will feature guest speaker Dr. Brenda Elsey, Associate Professor of History at Hofstra University. In addition, free entertainment will be offered Friday night to include music and the presentation of a play. The Center for Latin American Studies at The Ohio State University is seeking applications for fellowships for Summer 2020 and Academic Year 2020-2021 under the U.S. Department of Education's Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program. These fellowships are available to all full-time undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at all levels and in any department who are pursuing a course of study which requires advanced foreign language and area studies training. We highly encourage that you attend one of our information sessions if you are considering applying for this fellowship.
