Afro-Brazilian Arts And Activism: A Lecture Series

The Center for Latin American Studies is excited to announce "Afro-Brazilian Arts and Activism: A Lecture Series"! This virtual series will take place throughout the Spring 2021 semester. You can look forward to a variety of guest speakers, with presentations on the topic of Afro-Brazilian activism. All lectures will be free and open to the public!

Last week's lecture was presented by Antonio José Bacelar da Silva (University of Arizona). He presented his talk on "The Language of Antiracism".

The next lecture will be "Afro-Performance from Benin to Bahia: Unexpected Encounters" by Zeca Ligiéro (Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro). Join us this Friday, February 5 from 11:10-12:30 PM!

Hispanic And Lusophone Studies Symposium

The Graduate Students in the Spanish and Portuguese Department at The Ohio State University invite graduate students, professors, and researchers to participate in the 24th edition of the Annual Hispanic and Lusophone Studies Symposium (OSUHALSS), which will be held virtually on March 12th -13th, 2021. Interested scholars are invited to reflect and engage in a dialogue about the intersection between race and affect, in their various conceptualizations, within the literatures and cultures of the Luso-Hispanic world.

SPPO is calling for proposals for traditional papers, as well as other formats, including performance, creative writing, and video essay, among others. Proposals should be submitted by February 7, 2021.

Trans AND Digital Performance Festival

Join the Performance Studies Working Group, the Graduate Theatre Syndicate, Intersections, and the Theatre Research Institute for the Trans AND Digital Performance Festival on February 6-7. The festival brings together seven trans and gender nonconforming artists from across the United States for a weekend of genre-blending, gender-defying acts and dialogues exploring the intersections of art, identity, activism, and community.

Despite the increase in media visibility over the past decade, transgender people rarely see themselves reflected in meaningful ways in the arts or pop culture. Their stories are reduced to coming out, to medical curiosities, to violent tragedies. So trans artists are taking things into their own hands to rewrite the narrative, to reimagine the world in a way that it might hold us in all of our depth, in all of their complexity.

La Pocha Nostra Virtual Workshop

The Pocha Nostra Pedagogical Workshop is a four-hour guided workshop introducing participants to the pedagogical foundations of LPN's interdisciplinary performance practice: the body as a site for creation, reinvention, memory, activism, and ritual. This workshop will take place on February 13.

Faculty, graduate students, and staff interested in activism, performance, and embodied pedagogies are encouraged to apply for a limited spot! Applications are due today, February 1.

Spring BookBox Series

This spring, CLAS will be hosting another set of BookBox sessions. BookBox is a virtual reading group that allows K-12 teachers to come together and discuss books on integrating Latin America into the classroom. We are still looking to fill spots for the following BookBoxes:
