¿Por qué habría que abolir las fronteras?

The very first installment of the Abya Yala Student Organization's Conversations on a Changing Planet and Latin America will take place TODAY, Monday, April 12 (1:30pm EST) with Sara Riva presenting her talk called, "¿Por qué habría que abolir las fronteras?"

Sara will discuss the appalling conditions in which the people that seek asylum or the hope for a new life are forced to live in during their exodus across the border. From her close experience with migrants, Sara will share the stories of the people she met on the border and will explain to us why all borders should be abolished.

Disruption: Destructive and Generative Ruptures in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American Studies Center and the LASC Graduate Collective at the University of Maryland, College Park invite you to the 14th Annual Student Conference - "Disruption: Destructive and Generative Ruptures in Latin America and the Caribbean," to be held online on April 29 and 30. This conference features a keynote panel with scholars, community members, artists, and activists. It includes graduate and undergraduate student research panels and innovative sessions offering different ways of exchanging ideas.

Bringing the Border to Columbus: A Virtual Symposium will take place at The Ohio State University on April 12-16, 2021, supported by a Global Arts + Humanities Discover Theme grant. All events are FREE and open to the public!

At this symposium, academics, activists, artists, and community members are teaming up to bring to light how the policies enacted in the U.S.- Mexico borderlands have direct impacts on the lives of our immigrant neighbors, colleagues, family members, friends, and those who must reside under the protection of sanctuary. We will use art and scholarship to interrogate the politics of south-to-north migrations and the deaths and disappearances that result from U.S. immigration policies.

Teaching Central America: Summer 2021 Institute for K-12 Educators

Tulane University’s Stone Center for Latin American Studies invites you to the third annual Summer Institute for K-12 Educators! This year’s theme is Central America: People and the Environment. The institute will explore the historic connections between the United States and Central America focusing on indigenous communities and environment while highlighting topics of social justice and environmental conservation. This institute will highlight Central America from a historical, sociological, literary and culinary lens.

The institute will be held June 14 – 25, 2021.
