Afro-descendants and Legal Rights in Argentina: Intersectional Activism

April 7, 2021 (6-8pm), join us for a conversation with Black legal scholar activists to discuss the challenges African and Afro-descendants face in Argentina, the famed “European” or white nation of Latin America. After more than 120 years of erasure, a category for Afro-descendants appeared in the Argentine Census in 2010. In spite of this and other important steps of recognition for social inclusion, these individuals continue to face various forms of racialized violence and discrimination on a daily basis. Our panelists will provide insight into the legal fight against racism in the Argentine landscape. The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Judith Anderson.

¿Por qué habría que abolir las fronteras?

The very first installment of the Abya Yala Student Organization's Conversations on a Changing Planet and Latin America will take place Monday, April 12 (1:30pm EST) with Sara Riva presenting her talk called, "¿Por qué habría que abolir las fronteras?"

Sara will discuss the appalling conditions in which the people that seek asylum or the hope for a new life are forced to live in during their exodus across the border. From her close experience with migrants, Sara will share the stories of the people she met on the border and will explain to us why all borders should be abolished.

Project Narrative Core Faculty Lecture: Frederick Aldama

Please join Project Narrative on April 9 at 3pm EST for a Core Faculty Lecture by Dr. Frederick Aldama, as well as a celebration of Professor Aldama's work, achievements and contributions to Project Narrative. The talk is titled "Race and Coming of Age Superhero Comics, TV & Film," and it offers a sneak-peak into Aldama’s forthcoming Race and Coming of Age Superhero Comics, TV, & Film—a book that focuses on different types of worldbuilding as shaped by and through a series of coming of age characters of color. Aldama unpacks how a series of bildung comic books create differently inflected ethnoracial pauses that wake reader-minds to the dazzlingly dynamic kinesis of consciousness of a panoply of teen protagonists of color.

Language and Identity: Regional Variation and Attitudes in Highland Ecuador

The Department of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures invites you to their annual faculty lecture with Dr. Christina García on Friday, April 9 at 1pm. This talk explores language variation and use in Highland Ecuador. As a multilingual and multidialectal nation, Ecuador provides fertile ground for examining the mutual influence of language and society. The results from a perception experiment presented here show how a particular linguistic feature contributes to regional identity within and beyind the highlands.

The event is FREE and open to the public, and you do not need a background in linguistics to attend.

Bringing the Border to Columbus: A Virtual Symposium will take place at The Ohio State University on April 12-16, 2021, supported by a Global Arts + Humanities Discover Theme grant. All events are FREE and open to the public!

At this symposium, academics, activists, artists, and community members are teaming up to bring to light how the policies enacted in the U.S.- Mexico borderlands have direct impacts on the lives of our immigrant neighbors, colleagues, family members, friends, and those who must reside under the protection of sanctuary. We will use art and scholarship to interrogate the politics of south-to-north migrations and the deaths and disappearances that result from U.S. immigration policies.

Defiant Braceros: How Migrant Workers Fought for Racial, Sexual, and Political Freedom

Latina/o Studies is pleased to welcome Mireya Loza of Georgetown University, speaking on "Defiant Braceros: How Migrant Workers Fought for Racial, Sexual and Political Freedom" Thursday, April 8 at 2:30 pm. This talk interrogates the private lives of migrant men who participated in the Bracero Program (1942–1964), a binational agreement between the United States and Mexico that allowed hundreds of thousands of Mexican workers to enter this country on temporary work permits.
