Happy Memorial Day!

In Memoriam: Carlos M. López (1950-2020)

In April of 2020, after a long fight of almost twenty years against cancer, our colleague and friend, Carlos López, descended to Xibalbá, the underworld of the dead. Carlos will surely be remembered in international academic circles and among Guatemalan indigenous intellectuals as one of the most refined scholars and exegetes of Popol Wuj, the sacred book of the Mayan Kʼicheʼ ethnic group.

Columbus Council on World Affairs Signature Webinar Event

As Covid-19 continues to spread across the world, with cases continuing to rise, supply chains around the globe are beginning to take a hit. Most notably the food supply chain is beginning to strain. The meatpacking industry, unable to accommodate proper social distancing protocol, is experiencing a severe hit to their workforce. Farmers and agricultural businesses are taking to the fields after the winter season and need an abundance of able-bodied workers. But who typically fills these roles? Well according to the Department of Agriculture about half the country's field hands, more than a million workers, are undocumented immigrants.

On June 25, 2020, from 12-1 PM, the Columbus Council on World Affairs invites Mexican border correspondent and author, Alfredo Corchado, to take a deeper look at this issue, the impact on our food supply, and what it actually means to be an essential worker.

OIA Area Studies Centers Award Second Annual Conference Grant To Political Science Faculty

Professors Inés Valdez and Benjamin McKean of the Department of Political Science have been selected as the recipients of a 2019-20 Office of International Affairs (OIA) Area Studies Centers Conference Grant for their project "Worlds in Contention: Race, Neoliberalism, and Injustice". Please join us in congratulating these two on this great accomplishment!

Brazil Gateway Launches a Webinar Series

The Brazil Gateway team launched a series of webinars to take place this spring and summer on a variety of topics. Webinars will happen every week on Wednesdays, at 12 p.m. EST. On May 27, there will be a panel on "Advancements in cognitive modeling methods in light of replicability effort in partnership with University of São Paulo", led by Professor Fabio Leite.

The Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Art and Cultural Artifact Collection website is now LIVE!

The Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Art and Cultural Artifact Collection now has a virtual presence online, thanks to a team of student curators who have worked diligently to catalogue the items and develop the site. The collection supports a growing curriculum and innovative programming on the Andes and Amazonia connected to the Quechua Language Program and the Andean and Amazonian Studies Minor at OSU.

2020-21 K-12 Global Fellowship Program: "Intersection of Coffee and Tea Around the World: History, Culture, and Global Impact"

The Area Studies Centers have opened the application for the 2020-21 K-12 Global Fellowship program. The theme for this fellowship program is ''Intersection of Coffee and Tea Around the World: History, Culture, and Global Impact'' and it will consist of five sessions. Through the theme, teachers will explore the intersections of history, politics, and culture in tea and coffee consumption habits around the world.

The application deadline is Friday, May 29.

Call for Proposals for Richard E. Greenleaf Fellowship, Tulane University

Tulane University has extended the deadline to submit proposals for the Richard E. Greenleaf Fellowships at the Latin American Library until July 31, 2020 at 2:00 Central Time. This opportunity is for researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean, for 2020-2021.
