This week's Virtual Coffee Hour will be Part Two of the impact that COVID-19 has had on indigenous communities in Latin America. Last week, Elvia Andía Grágeda (OSU Quechua Instructor) shared information about the impact of the pandemic on indigenous communities in Bolivia. This week, Nydia Delhi Mata Sánchez (Rector, Universidad Tecnológica de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca) will lead the discussion.

Tania Espinales Correa receives College of Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Award for Teaching Excellence

Please join us in congratulating Tania Espinales Correa for receiving the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Student Award for Teaching Excellence. Each year, the award recognizes two graduate students from across the college for their excellence in teaching and for their impact on the undergraduate student experience. This is a wonderful recognition of Tania's talents as an instructor and CLAS graduate student affiliate.

Kichwa Webinars

SPPO Graduate student Santiago Gualapuro Gualapuro has organized a series of webinars in Kichwa to be hosted by a variety of Kichwa experts during May 2020. Each webinar will address an important and timely issue, such as the Kichwa language and language policy; health issues facing Kichwa communities; Kichwa legal system, and migration. In addition to Gualapuro, the series will feature Daqui Lema from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Ibarra, Isabel Gualapuro from Universidad Central Quito, Israel Andrango from the Centro de Mediacion Comunitaria; and Fabian Muenala from the radio station Kichwa Hatari in New York.

The webinars will start at 6:00 PM EST, 5:00 PM Ecuadorean time.

Glenn Martinez wins seed grant dedicated to COVID-19 research

Glenn Martinez, CLAS faculty affiliate and Director of the Center for Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, has received a seed grant from OSU's Office of Research dedicated to COVID-19-related research for his project, "Social vulnerability, sociolinguistic environment, and access to COVID-19 information among Spanish-speakers in Columbus, Ohio." The project will address enduring racial and ethnic health disparities by assessing the "sources, trust, satisfaction, and comprehension of COVID-19 information by Spanish speakers" in the city and correlating that data with social vulnerability indexing (SVI). Upon completion, the study will be shared with the participants themselves and include "a set of evidence-based recommendation to assist planners in disseminating information more effectively through the duration of the pandemic." Call for Proposals for Richard E. Greenleaf Fellowship, Tulane University

Tulane University has extended the deadline to submit proposals for the Richard E. Greenleaf Fellowships at the Latin American Library until July 31, 2020 at 2:00 Central Time. This opportunity is for researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean, for 2020-2021.

2020-21 K-12 Global Fellowship Program: "Intersection of Coffee and Tea Around the World: History, Culture, and Global Impact"

The Area Studies Centers have opened the application for the 2020-21 K-12 Global Fellowship program. The theme for this fellowship program is ''Intersection of Coffee and Tea Around the World: History, Culture, and Global Impact'' and it will consist of five sessions. Through the theme, teachers will explore the intersections of history, politics, and culture in tea and coffee consumption habits around the world.

The application deadline is Friday, May 29.

The Wexner Center for the Arts is streaming the film, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (Bruno Batteto, 1976) for $12 via Film Movement. Watch this classic erotic comedy online in a new restoration from Film Movement. Based on the novel by Jorge Amado, Dona Flor became the most successful film in Brazilian history on its initial release.

Global Read Webinar Series: Reading Across Cultures

Once a month, the World Area Book Awards (Américas Award, Africana Book Award, Freeman Book Award, Middle East Book Award, and the South Asia Book Award) sponsor a 60 minute webinar on a book recognized by one of the awards. Each webinar features a presentation by an award-winning author with discussion on how to incorporate multicultural literature into the classroom.
